Upgrading RAM to 16 GB

Hi Guys,

I am not well versed with the RAM tech definitions. Great if you could let me know if its possible to upgrade to 2* 4 8 GB Ram from 2*1 GB.

And whether this below RAM spec wil work

DDR3-1600/PC3-12800

SO-DIMM Memory Module

204-pin Configuration

11-11-11-28 CAS Latency

If you have the 2009 A1342 model, then no, it does not support 16 GB of RAM.

On the other hand, if you have the 2010 A1342 model, then you're in luck because as long as you're running OS X Lion or later it will support 16 GB of RAM.

The PC3-12800 RAM that you have should be backwards compatible in place of the PC3-8500 that the A1342 MacBook came with, but it will not run any faster than 1066 MHz.

Thanks mate. Mine is Macbook 7,1, think its 2010. What do you mean by backwards compatibility?

I frankly do not understand the technicality, but, I would like to see a drastic difference after updgrading from 2 to 16GB RAM.. Will that happen or I should go for 2 to 8GB? Thanks in advance

Here's what he means by backwards compatibility: Your system is specced to run PC3-8500 RAM, which operates at 1066 MHz. The PC3-12800 RAM you picked can run at speeds up to 1600 MHz, but not in your system—it will be backwards compatible with the lower system speed and run at 1066 MHz.

Moral of the story, if it's cheaper, get the PC3-8500 and save your money, as both will run at the same speed.

As for the drastic difference, you should notice a huge improvement after either upgrade—these days 2 GB only barely cuts it—but I wouldn't expect much difference between 8 and 16 GB. I personally wouldn't invest in 16 GB for a 4-5 year old machine, and would install 4 or 8 GB instead.

Good luck!

Thanks you very much for the explanation. I have decided to go with

DDR3-1066/PC3-8500

SO-DIMM Memory Module

204-pin Configuration

9-9-9-24 CAS Latency

1.5 V Specified Voltage

Dual Channel Memory Configuration

1 x 4 GB DRAM Structure

What is CAS latency. Should I be bothered with that?

Or

# DDR3-1066/PC3-8500

# SO-DIMM Memory Module

# 204-pin Configuration

# 7-7-7 CAS Latency

Which one will be the better option. And will these have significant difference performance iwse?
