Dual HD software Qs, and Fan Questions

I have an iMac 27" 3.1 core i5 2429 16gb ram. I have changed out the HD 2 x, have always had

1)fan issues (used SMC and then HDD fan control, didn't work) that I would love to resolve. I have currently uninstalled both.

Now, I am attempting this dual HD install. I want to fix the fans and I also want to ask about software install: Is there a particular order? Do I need to uninstall OS X 10.10 on my HDD and then install it on my SSD? Is it ok to have it on both? That would take up a bit of extra space. And I have nearly 4tb of data that is backed up in time capsule that I definitely want on my new 6tb hdd, otherwise its pointless. A step by step on the software install and a separate one on the fan would be really helpful. I'm sick of hearing the %#*@ thing running at full blast.

Hi There,

Most users would install an Operating system on just the SSD and use the Hard Drive for data storage. You do not need to uninstall OS X first, you just use recovery or an installer to install to the SSD and once you have booted up to the SSD you can then erase the hard drive if there is no data you require.

The 2011 Imac fans will run on full as it can not get the correct temperature of the hard drive anymore. The standard Apple Hard Drive has the temperature sensor built into the drive and relays the temperature through the power cable rather than having a separate sensor cable.

Whenever you replace the standard drive with another non-Apple drive such as a Western Digital Green 6TB the logic board will not be able to read the temperature from the drive as the firmware is different and doesn't know how to relay the temperature.

OWC have a cable which will work with your model: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIM...

You can usually get the cable slightly cheaper from eBay if you search for OWCDIYIMACHDD11 OR OWCDIDIMACHDD11. The DIY kit includes the tools whereas the DID is just the cable.

Luckily, the fan issue has fixed itself! I loaded a clean install of OS 10.10 on the SSD (samsung 840 256gb). I added trim software and never reinstalled the aftermarket fan control software at all. I have a Seagate enterprise 6TB HDD with 128 mb cache in the original HD spot. Everything is up and running beautifully! NO NOISY FANS! First time in 2 years. I don't know if its part of the Yosemite upgrade or what, but 3 days out I have no fan issues!

Just FYI, my iMac originally came with a 1tb western digital and have used a 4tb seagate for the last 2 years. I don't know what has changed or why the fan is quiet now, but I thought I'd list these specifics so that anyone else interested can check it out.

If anything changes and the fans go haywire again, I'll post it here.

Good luck!
