no response when connected to computer or anything else

When I connect my ipod to the computer it does not make the sound that it recognizes that is it=s connected and the screen of the ipod just says charging please wait I can open I tunes and it does nothing I have left the ipod charging fir hours and nothing I tried to do a recovery to the ipod it comes up on the screen of the computer that I am doing a recover and then nothing please help?
