lightning port replacement led to dead home button & mic

Hi, my iPhone 5 lightning port contacts were worn away/damaged so I replaced the port assembly.

All looked fine when put back together but the microphone had stopped working.

I thought the replacement port assembly was bad so bought another and installed that - but unfortunately that didn't solve the problem.

Then the home button stopped working too!

During one of the times I was putting the thing back together I think I put one of the connectors on the grounding cable that wraps around the headphone socket on wrong so the display was a tight fit...possible that the home button stopped working around that time, but I can't honestly say for sure.

I have another iPhone 5 so swapped the display/digitiser (which contains the home button) but that didn't fix it (and the original one works fine on the other phone).

Now I'm stuck with a phone that looks fine but with dead microphone and home button...I'd be really grateful for any ideas thanks.

Thanks Duane. I know those spring clips. Did have a play with them before but didn't seem to make any difference.

Think the problem may be more serious though - the original issue arose about a week or two ago. Since then the phone's been in a drawer. When I got it out to try these fixes the battery was dead. I've had it on charge now for a couple of hours but the thing is lifeless. No charging image/anything on the screen. When I put it in my drawer the battery definitely had life in it as the screen worked. Have tried disconnect/reconnect battery but no dice.

Does that help in identifying what the underlying problem might be? TIA

Can't remember if it's part of the charging port, but there should be 2 little spring clips which touch the flex cable when the screen is pushed down, is one/both of these broken off??

Hey all I just had this problem too. It is 7-14-15 now so hopefully the op found the solution, but to all future readers my issue was with the new contacts not touching the screen when the phone was re-assembled. my fix was placing some additional 3M adhesive below the the contacts to raise them. i had also tried prying the contact prongs up, but that was not enough. When I re- assembled the first time, the contacts fit perfectly in the notch and did not look like they needed adjustment. I was getting frustrated and tried the double sided tape for spacing as a last resort and viola. So before you give up on this issue try adding some thicker adhesive for spacing!

You can turn on assistive touch under settings Accessibility. This will give you an on screen home button and a functional phone.

I had the same problem with my own iPhone5 after replacing the dock connector.

I then compared the replacement connector with my original and discovered a missing IC on the flexible circuit board on the left side of the lightning connector. (looking from top with connector opening facing you)

It turns out that I had dislodged this little ic when refitting the new dock connector assembly. This chip must provide the interface for the home button.

So I ordered another docking connector assembly and have fitted the new assembly carefully and now I have a functional phone. I noticed on the new replacement connector assembly that this chip has a lot more adhesive applied so maybe it was a problem (poor adhesive application) that has been rectified.

see the image and look carefully at the two lightning connectors the connector on the left is missing an IC, there are some small pads but no IC. I dislodged it while fitting the new lightning connector assembly.

By the way the guides and parts service from fixit is great, sure beats replacing the whole phone instead of just a $20 part.

Thanks iFixit people.
