will not boot past logo and spining fan

hi i bought a Ibook G4 off criegs list and it worked fine. Slow but worked fine. ive never had a mac laptop but a room mate has one . i let him look at it and he said i had alot of movies etc.on it soo i let him delete it and now it starts to the logo and spining fan and stops wont boot please help
