Random Shutdowns Preceded By a Grey Screen Of Death

The problem. The machine displays the grey screen of death asking to be restarted. Boots right up and works normally without any hangups until the next shutdown episode. This happens somewhat randomly whether on battery or AC adapter.

The changes that have been done to the original configuration hardware-wise are as follows: added Kingston RAM, upgraded HD to solid state Samsung EVO one. That's about it. The machine worked like clockwork since it was bought for roughly 3 years (and after the above changes were made). I initially suspected the RAM and the HD (but I think those have been ruled out as I have swapped them back out with the same persisting shutdowns).

I also explored whether this may be a software issue, but had to rule it out after running the machine off of different HDs to see if the issue would go away, but alas it didn't. I inspected crash logs and they were no help. There is nothing there that suggests a reason for the problem. Someone suggested that the latter suggests a hardware rather than a software issue as well. Is that a fair assumption?

The shutdowns have been on the increase. First they occurred very rarely. Now they may happen as often as several times a week.

Someone else suggested a CPU/component overheating issue due to failing heatsink bond. Is there a way to prove/disprove this without tearing the whole machine apart? But then and again, I'm thinking the shutdowns are not necessarily related to the machine doing CPU-intensive processing.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the original Apple hardware test. However, I ran Tech Tool Pro test panel and it turned up no problems.

The question: At this point is it safe to assume it's a hosed logic board or there is another possible issue I haven't thought off that may be at fault. Puzzling. Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

It appears that I may have stumbled on a possible clue about the problem right here on the forums: Logic Board Failure due to Nvidia Graphics processor GT330M

I once had this problem with another MBP model and found out the KPs were caused by a bad optical drive cable. When i want to test a logic board I remove it from the computer case and only connect a known working DCin board on it, USB keyboard and mouse, external screen, external HD then I test the board. If the board works OK then the problem is inside the computer case.

UH I would install a fan control from macupdate website for free (macsfancontrol or SMC) just to see if the fan is still working. The system without a fan control just waits until it is hot then turns on-Yes? Any testing you are doing just heats the CPU and the GPU. If it cold outside, then go out and install the Fan control-if you can control the fan speed manually (and thus the temperature) The problem will be revealed. Heat sink bond= if you are going to replace the fan ifixit will show you how to replace the thermal paste it is quite inexpensive good luck and patience
