Won't boot up-Gets a black "Restart" screen in many languages

The driver has tested as fine. It starts up in target mode. I get a start-up chime but does not complete the process. I've reset the PRAM and the PMU already. When running Disk Utility or Disk Warrior in target mode, the process stops midway. The problem started when the laptop was on and was picked up. Then the desktop had a transparent blue tint to it and a series of beeps were heard. Does anyone has any other ideas on possible fixes? Apparantly this problem is called a "kernal panic" but I connot find many solutions. Thanks.

Scott

Thanks for the reply. You are right about the memory issue. I forgot to mention that I found on of the RAM chipsets to be bad and now it has the one good one.

Kernal Panic is linked to the logic board and as a result you might need a new one

Not completely true. Many things can cause kernel panics (note correct spelling), both hardware and software.

With this case though, it seems likely. If you read skaman's answer further down...

It might be memory related. I'd remove the battery and RAM, and test the memory slots one at a time with a single module of known-good RAM, probably also resetting PMU and PRAM each time you power up with a different RAM config. Reset the PRAM three times past the initial power-up chime -- this does a more comprehensive reset than a single PRAM reset.

It's unlikely, but before giving up on this machine I'd probably take the hard drive out, format it on another computer, and try again, or even install the full OS to the hard drive on another machine, and then see if you can boot from the laptop to that hard drive in target mode, or with the HD put back in the machine.

I always keep hard drives around with the full OS installed, because it's always interesting to put them in "bad" machines and see if it makes a difference. Sometimes a machine cannot deal with the installation of an OS, but if you give it a HD that already has the OS, for some reason it seems to bypass its own issues and start working.

I'd suspect the hard drive first, especially since the problem started when the computer was moved while the drive was on. When you say the "driver tested as fine", how did you check it? The fact that Disk Warrior couldn't complete a repair sure indicates a problem with the drive.

Can you boot to the system DVD successfully? Or an external hard drive with a compatible system on it? It appears so, since you say you've tried Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. While DW was running, did it throw up any messages relating to disk malfunction? When it failed, what did it say? Or did it just freeze up the computer? You can check the system log on the system you ran DW from (not if it's on a CD, but if it's on a hard drive) and see what else got logged.

If you do have an external drive with at least 10.4.11 on it, download and run SMART Utility (find it on versiontracker.com). This will tell you for sure if your internal drive is failing (well, 95% surety). Disk Utility's SMART status indicator is not good enough.

If you need to recover your data, can you boot into Firewire Target Mode and copy your stuff off to another computer? Then try reformatting the drive; do a repartition too (Apple Partition Map). But I don't personally think this is worth it; the drive is old enough that it would behoove you to replace it anyway.

Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's helpful comments. It looks like one of the RAM chips was bad and I put the bottom one in the top slot. That got rid of the black restart screen. It still did not start-up correctly, although I do get a "BONG" when pressing the power button. I also heard a clicking coming from possibly the HD so I put in a new one but cannot install the OS as I get a gray screen and a spinning wheel. I suspect the logic board now unless anyone has other ideas.

Once you rule out the RAM and the HD, you're probably right.

I assume this gray screen comes up when you're trying to boot to the installer CD or DVD. Are you sure you have the right one? Do you have any other external you can try to boot to?

Can you start it up in Target mode and connect it to another Mac? If so, try to reformat the internal drive; then you'll know if it's installed correctly.
