Can I heat iOpener with hot water bath?

Do I really need temperatures higher than 100°C to melt the adhesive? Can I use a boiling water bath? I can understand the required time may be longer, but is it too long to be practical, e.g. more than 1-2 hours?

You do *NOT* want to put your iopener is water. This will quite possibly ruin the materials inside. Also, you never want to dry heat it. I had a co-worker borrow mine and he heated it up beyond the recommended time and without a damp paper towel. It smelled like a cheap microwaveable burrito being burnt, or that nasty smell of burnt popcorn in a small office space.

If you follow the proper instructions, it will work. You will have to reheat it a few times and be gentle, but I've used it many times when dealing with iPads that have LCD issues where the digitizer is still in great shape. This tool has saved me countless amounts of dollars and headaches by enabling me to remove the digitizers and keep them in perfect working shape to reuse on the same device after the repair. Customers will be very happy that you saved them money by not breaking their digitizers during removal.

The iOpener is designed for devices with a plastic midframe. A heat gun can easily/quickly bring the adhesive to a high temperature to loosen the digitizer/display assembly, but at this temperature the plastic mid frame is extremely malleable and any tool you use to pry the front panel from the device will come in direct contact with the mid frame and distort its shape permanently. I have worked on iPads, Nexus 7s, Samsung tablets, and many more devices. The iPad digitizer fits precisely inside the mid frame. The Nexus frame is RIDICULOUSLY malleable (I have warped one very easily). Many people want to nickel and dime as they go, so maintaining these individual parts is imperative. This tool has worked wonders and saved me a couple hundred dollars in parts already. The heat passes through the glass easily and heats up the adhesive, and its not so hot to warp the frames. Heat guns are too hot for this, I only use one if the part came with a frame bundled.

For many the issue is not having a variable temp heat gun. If you have it too hot you could damage things. Frankly, I think lack of experience is the bigger issue. I've not had any problems using a heat gun even with plastic parts!

True, I only have higher temp heat gun, happy with iOpener though

Never had a issue with using heat gun

each to there own I suppose
