Is my iPhone 4s not working because of this?...

The other day I dropped my iPhone down the toilet. I've done it previously about a year ago, so I knew what to do: turned it straight off, took out the SIM card and put it in rice for 48 hours. This worked perfectly last time. However this time I took my phone out, tried turning it on and the screen remained black - but with a slight blue tint.

The phone then started vibrating as though I was receiving messages, and when I got my friend to call me, it started vibrating again. So the phone's working but the screen isn't.

I've had a google and tried to work out what's wrong with it and how I can fix it. I have opened it up and had a look at the display connector. From what I can work out, corrosion has got to it, but I am no expert and am not 100% sure.

This is what it looks like:

Is this corrosion? And if so how can I fix it?

Thank you all! I've found an experienced shop as I didn't feel confident in cleaning it myself. Thanks for letting me know about the rice thing too!

kelly fisher, using rice to clean your phone is about the equivalent to doing nothing. Skip that step in the future. Rice will not stop corrosion from forming. The very first thing I suggest is that you stop using the device, (remove the battery) and totally disassemble it, follow the guides on here. Then clean it with +90% isopropyl alcohol. This will displace the water and stop corrosion. It it okay to submerge a board in isopropyl alcohol. Here is a guide for that. Even so it was written for a 3G, the procedure is still the same. After that, air dry all the components. Do not forget to clean the connectors on the board as well as the cables. Then re-assemble with a new battery This is not optional but a must to avoid failure later on. " Check your board for any missing or damaged component. Water damage is the toughest to trouble shoot and to repair. There is really no a surefire way to say which part is the one that gives you the problem. I would recommend that you start it systematically. Start with the easiest part, and that is the display, replace that. If your screen is absolutely black, with no faint images, I am certain that this is your problem. If it would have faint images, I would recommend to take a look at the backlight IC and coil and filters on the logic board. That repair is a bit more difficult due to the fact that those are SMD components. Try the display first. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hello,

There is hope for you! As you can take your phone to an experienced shop and have a pro preform water damage treatment on it.

The corrosion destroys metal which most electronic components are made of, cleaning it with a pro, might restore the phone, it might not, it depends on who you go to and how good they are at it. However at this point you have nothing to loose...and @oldturkey3 he couldn't be more right, rice does absolutely nothing for your phone.

Water damage can be a tricky one and the success rate depends on your ability to spot micro corrosions and how well you clean the board. In this cleaning process you may have to replace other components, like the battery or charger port, maybe others.

Once you disassemble the the phone you should drop the logic board in an ultrasonic cleaner with the proper amount of alcohol. If you know how to solder and it is substantial water damage, I recommend removing any shield, you can solder them back together later. Once this done, blow it dry and reassemble.

You should use a new battery and charger port when reassembling, it best practice. Once assembled try top preform a hard reset, given you get a apple logo to show up. Try this treatment twice. If you do have to do it again, throw the board under a microscope and make sure there are no fractures or burnt resistors on the board.

Good Luck!

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

It is a small miracle that you have a backlight at all on this phone. That is heavy corrosion right in the classic place--the backlight filters. Like OldTurkey suggests, you can give a try to clean it up with alcohol, including the display flexes, and a new screen (just attach it without installing to see). My guess is that it won't work. You'll need to do some microsoldering to reflow and/or replace the tiny--now brittle-- components there that will come off when you clean it, or are so heavily oxidized that they won't be able to make a good solder joint.

Please take OldTurkey's advice to heart about the rice. It is not an effective dessicant, so putting a phone in rice is about the same as letting a spill of apple juice simply dry out on your countertop. It is far and away more effective to clean the corrosion out of the phone right away using alcohol to displace the water and its dissolved minerals BEFORE the phone has a chance to really dry. Tell all your friends!
