Random voice quality issue after teardown; people can't always hear me

I replaced an Iphone 4s display assembly and accidentally ripped the ribbon for the upper microphone, so i also had to replace the headphone jack assembly as well. But I got it back together with no issues.

Everything worked fine, but now randomly during a phone call my voice quality worsens and whoever I'm talking to can't hear me - - my words get muffled and they can't hear me. This only happens sporadically like 25% of the time, and then gets better. Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix it?

can anyone help on this? it's very random; sometimes it will be working fine and then all of a sudden, people say it sounds like i'm in a tunnel and my voice is garbled, and then it will suddenly clear up. should i reopen it and try making sure the cellular antenna is attached properly? or is it the microphone?

Hi Tyler,

It could be one of the codec chips on the board going out. I can't remember off the top of my head which one it is (it is the chip responsible just for audio during voice calls) but I have encountered this issue a lot. It's usually from poor solder from factory, and pressure around this chip reconnects it a bit, improving the call quality while you are using it. I've heard that a board reflow will help this issue but I just increased surface area around the chip so that when back cover was put on, it put pressure on top of it. Good luck.

eric - thanks for taking the time to respond. what did you put in to increase the surface area? and do you know the general location of where the pressure needs to be? thanks
