I had the same problem: one of the prongs was missing. I refound it and am now wondering if it simply can be rebrazed?

As elisa restine I would like to avoid re-replacing the whole front panel...

i accidentally swiped off one of the gold prongs myself. i took a THIN piece of foil and taped it to the dock so the foil is in contact with the socket the prong protrudes from. make sure the foil sticks up a little so it can touch the gold strip on the screen assembly. it worked for me.

Pry up the assembly again and check where the home button is. There should be two small gold prongs protruding from the assembly. These come in contact with the two other gold strips where the dock connector is. If the prongs are missing, then that's your problem. These break off easily and you might have not even noticed.

I had same problem after replacing the screen myself. The power goes on and touch screen work just fine, but home button was no longer functional...

After careful study, I found out that two small prongs didn't have the solid connection when assembling. It seems two prongs were bended to the opposite direction when using heater to remove the adhesive. Just gently bend them backwards to the original shape and you will be able to use the home button!

Same thing happened to me - In my case, it was that the part I was replacing (speaker/dock connector/antenna) that I had bought from Zeetron had an insulating resin substance that was covering one of the pads on the speaker assembly that the two prongs from the home button contact. A little extra fine sandpaper (or pencil eraser) to clean the contact pads and a good vacuum and now it works...

I accidentally heated the home button too much and I think it deformed the shape/size of it a little bit. This caused it to not "pop" in and out as normal. If you look under the button you'll see it has a silver contact that goes in and out on the button itself and a silver contact on the phone as well. I folded a small amount of aluminium foil and slipped it in between the two contacts to help give the button something to spring up and down on. Too thick amount of foil it won't be able to be depressed, too thin it won't pop back up. Find a happy medium and it'll work fine. I did this while the adhesive was pretty fresh so I just pulled the glass off with the suction cup and experimented with the right amount of foil padding. I gently heated the screen back up and firmly pressed it back together for good measure.

And it was just that easy!

Thanks for that.

Now, can anybody tell me if I can replace the CONNECTER for the LCD unit, as opposed to replacing the lcd. You see, I have a fully working LCD, where the tiny prongs on the connector have all come away, leaving just the plastic circuit ribbon.

You must get a full working Display LCD with the attached ribbon and connector. (it is labeled connector #1 by Apple) Also it must be the unit for 3GS. (iPhone 3G is different) It is supposedly impossible to remove and reattach a good ribbon cable to LCD. Also before opening and during all repairs of iPhone 3GS make sure it is OFF.

Thanks for your responses to this, very helpful indeed. In fact it was to do with the two small metal prong connectors that are were bent up, so some careful re-bending (making sure you support the small circuit board they sit on so that they dont snap off!)

Worked a treat. Thanks

Same issue and thanks everyone for the suggestions. It was indeed the gold prongs were bent and not aligned. Simply used a plastic spudger and very carefully repositioned them
