Crashed Cannot Boot up. Can Hard drive be pulled?

iMac 27" 2010

We loaded Yosemite and everything worked for about 24 hours and then I heard crazy munching sounds and the rainbow wheel would not stop spinning. I walked away for awhile and when I came back the computer had shut itself down. Now when I try to power up I get a grey screen with the apple logo in the middle with a loading bar beneath it. The bar starts filling in like its loading and then halfway through computer shuts itself down again.

Can I pull the hard drive out to try and save all my files?

(and yes I get the dummy of the day award, I have not had even a near recent backup of the computer.)

Thanks for any advice and guidance.

Hi Mayer.

I've tried every option to boot up this computer. Apple told me my disk is unrepairable and that sometime this happens to an old computer (5 years) when you upgrade. They said its too late to get a backup that I most likely lost everything.

Do you believe in your experience this to be true. Is there no way to get my photos and files back?
