Why does my computer run programs so slowly?

When I open programs on this laptop, it takes a long time for them to load. Running programs is also not smooth and often causes the screen to freeze up. Even starting up the computer takes an unreasonably long time. What is the cause of this?

Sounds like the hard drive in in trouble.

Do you have an external drive which you can setup Windows on? If you can you could try restarting your system using it and then running diagnostics on the drive.
