Sound doesn't work in calls but works everywhere else. Any tips?

Hello to the wonderful ifixit community!

I've got an iPhone 5 here which has me stumped.

Here's the deal:

When I go to voice memo's app and record, it records correctly and I can play it back through the normal speaker and the earpiece speaker.

When on a phone call - there is no sound at all, not on speaker or on the earpiece.

I've done a erase all contents and settings twice (once I restored from a backup, once I didn't restore anything and set it up as a new device) and occasionally (1/10 times?) the sound would work on call, but most of the time there's nothing, and some of the times there's like a crackling noise that goes TAP TAP TAP.

So PLEASE help me :(

I don't understand why, I even replaced the earpiece speaker just to be sure but it still won't reliably work in calls.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Weird sounds can mean there is someone monitoring your calls. You might have an undetectable spyware installed on your device with no other purpose but to steal all your information and most likely destroy the tapped device sometimes. You can always check for malware and other malicious programs that can cost you your money, credit card details and other information. Act today, use darkwebssolutions on gmail for all your cybersecurity issues. I highly recommend them

By any chance, did this occur after an iOS updaate?

If it did or even not, try to restore a completely new software.

1/ Prepare:

- back-up your phone's content to iCloud or the latest version of iTunes on your computer,

- turn off Find My iPhone.

2/ DFU mode:

- press power button for 3 seconds,

- start pressing home button without releasing power button, 12 seconds,

- at 12 seconds, release power button. Keep pressing home button for another 15 seconds.

- at this point your screen should be black. If you see "connect to iTunes" you're in Restore Mode not DFU Mode. Either repeat or try your luck with that mode.

3/ Restore:

- start the latest iTunes on your computer,

- use an original cable to connect your iPhone to your computer,

- you should get a prompt from iTunes saying it detected an iPhone in restore mode,

- you will be also prompted to download and restore the latest version of iOS,

- accept and leave your iPhone connected and undisturbed until it finishes the process. If your Internet connection is slow, it can be a while. The new software is ~1.6GB.

- test your phone. If ok, restore your back-up and turn on Find My iPhone.

If the above does not help, come back here to seek help identifying what hardware issue may be causin this. For this, do you have access to another known good iPhone 5?

Thanks for a detailed response, I'll answer below.

This did not occur after an iOS update, I bought a iPhone that was in pretty bad condition, I replaced the entire rear housing assembly, as well as the entire front panel assembly (including earpiece, camera, etc) and I didn't noticed a problem until I actually needed to make a call. It works perfectly in voice memos, it gets reception just fine, it just won't have any audio on phone calls, even after multiple clean restores.

I did put the iPhone in DFU mode (multiple times) and restored it, and did NOT restore from any backups to be sure it wasn't a software issue, but alas, no luck :(

I don't have access to an iPhone 5, FYI I run an iPhone repair shop, but this was my personal iPhone I fixed, I may be getting another iPhone 5 soon, so I can swap out the motherboard, which I suspect is the problem.

No sound during regular calls could be due to audio codec IC...

Voice calls and voice memo both use the bottom mic. Meaning if you can record voice memos, bottom mic should be ok.

Use 10x-20x or more magnification to check all the small SMD's around the PMV and screen connectors. If you find anything damaged, corroded, missing, it could be your cause right there.

If not, it could be the audio codec IC acting out. You can also examine the audio circuit with a multimeter, may be there's an issue with continuity to the audio codec IC.

dear kimoko,

i am having the same problem with my phone and would like to know, if you got your phone fixed, how you did it. I also have an iPhone 5 and whenever I call someone i cannot hear anything unless I am using it on speaker or earphones. I would be eternally grateful if you could let me know how you solved your problem two years ago.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Thanks,

from S.Hart
