Fixing Phantom Touch Issue?

My problem:

2-3 stripes of the screen do not pick up touch input. Not only that, but they also freak out and receive phantom inputs, making it impossible to work with the thing without disabling the touchscreen.

Apparently, some part associated with the touch input is broken. But which one is it?

I could either replace the screen, together with the digitizer (Microsoft Surface RT (1st Gen) Screen), or I could replace what is called the Digitizer Board.([연계 제품이 누락 또는 비활성화 됨: IF263-003])

Do you guys have any experience with this? Which part causes the trouble? I have yet to find the answer on the Internet. I see people with the same issue though.

Okay, so I used a couple of methods together for this.

The first method is the 'Sony fix' -- search for 'surface panel calibration tool' - the download you're looking for is called UNOOTH-P0112513-1082 with an MD5 of 91514542bdf87898ea24dfe4add0548e.

The second method (which surprisingly no-one on the internet has suggested) was uninstalling the touch drivers!

Here's the combo I did that worked, but please bear in mind that I can't verify that its neither one nor the other that would sort it out in isolation:

1) Uninstall the touch drivers -> right click Start -> device manager -> right click HID Compliant touchscreen -> uninstall

2) Touch your screen to make sure the drivers have gone

3) Run the panel tool

4) Back in device manager, file or edit (I can't remember) -> scan for hardware changes

5) profit.

I really hope this helps someone out there. Its an annoyance at best, but if you're borderline OCD about certain things then you'll breathe a sigh of relief

Wow! YOU SIR are a superstar! Fixed an issue that seems to have plagued everyone, me included! Well done!

Thanks! Glad it worked for you - now spread the word!

This didn't work for me, and I've tried every trick in the book. My last resort is removing my $50 screen protector, but I doubt that's the problem. I have the SP3 i5 128gb for those interested. Oh and the Calib G4 tool doesn't work either. I keep getting a "missing MSVCPC100.DLL" error. I managed to import that file, but the file I'm assuming is compatible for my model. Either way, if the screen protector isn't the problem then it's in fact a hardware issue. I'll take to manufacture if my last resort doesn't work.

mostly worked for me too. Surface 2. Used an external mouse, fought my way through, did as said.

How did you run that tool on a first gen Surface RT? I can't run it even with testsigning on, and UMCI unlocked.

I’ve experienced a problem like this twice in the last six weeks now with my Surface Pro 3 (i5, 256gb).

Mine snaps to the top right corner and then closes any full screen programs!

Through a combination of things I got it resolved the first time, and I think/hope I’ve fixed it again this time. The bits that seem to do the trick are: uninstall the bluetooth drivers, uninstall the surface pen and arc touch mouse drivers (if you have one), then perform a two button reset (hold volume up and power button for about 30 seconds, you will see some screens flick on and off (including a screen with text that you likely won't have seen before), but don’t release the buttons until the screen is off and stays off. Then press the power on button. It should reinstall all the bluetooth and pen drivers and have cleared the kernel cache. You will likely have to go to the microsoft app store to download the arc touch mouse app again. Hope this helps

I love the initiative man! Always worth going back through answers to see if you can help. You may have a solution that was missed. In this case, however, the thread is about the original Surface RT. Almost none of that lengthly tree applies :(

No 2 button reset, can not install the link application (or any for that matter), no calibration in the location directed.

It is so complete though, that I would logve to see somebody link to this from the Surface Pro 3 section or copy it over. Cheers.

After months of torturing, i decided to reinstall from scratch my surface pro 4. Went to the site, downloaded surface Image, installed on USB and restored original image.

It worked fine until stupid windows update updated my drivers as well INTEL HD 520 and other drivers. I went back and rolled back all the drivers. Problem is gone for now.

Dont forget to disable automatic driver update in Group Policy
