Why isn’t my camera reading my memory card?

I have the memory card in its place, but it seems as though the camera is not recognizing that its there.

First, try taking the memory card out and reinserting it. If the problem still occurs, the camera may be an older camera and it may not work with newer memory cards. The software on the newer memory cards is more advanced than that of an older more compatible one.
