Can someone explain this date & time issue one iOS 8.3?

This device has a very strange date & time issue (maybe multiple issues).

Auto time/date

  • will not automatically detect the timezone
  • will not automatically adjust to the correct time

Maintain time/date

  • the time will count upwards as normal until the screen is locked for roughly 10 minutes (sleep)
  • once the device resumes from sleep (unlock) it will display the time that was registered immediately prior to sleeping - and will continue to count upwards as normal from there

Manually setting time/date

  • when manually setting the date & time, the day/month scroll will sporadically change - for example: above the selector bar will show 9 May, below the bar will show 11 May but inside the bar will show 26 Oct (all just example dates).
  • when scrolling through the dates, the day/month will magically meld into the incorrect sequence of day/month
  • often the 'set date & time' will jump forward or backward by as much as 30 years or more (sometimes also resetting to Unix Epoch)
  • often the scrolling selector will just end at a completely conceivable date - such as ending on 9 Sep 1983 with no further dates possible after that

I have noticed that this issue also seems to effect WiFi stability. Likely due to security rejecting because of incorrect time.

Here is a video I have taken which identifies most of the issues (watch for the magic trick around 3:45 lol)

I have had a similar issue before, this can be related sometimes to a defective battery, sounds weird I know, but I have replaced the battery on a device with this problem and it corrected it.

Also, try DFU restore.

To add on to this answer, if it's not the battery or if a software restore doesn't solve your issue, then you have a problem with a certain chip on the logic board called the Y2 Crystal, this chip needs replacing by someone who can microsolder.

Let me know how it goes! :)

I did notice that the battery wouldn't charge after draining, which has since been replaced.

Still no fix, the DFU restore didn't resolve anything.

If the battery isn't charging after it has died, then that is a U2 IC chip problem. :-)

I'm not sure if any of you are having the same issue, but I was also struggling with this issue on my 5c, and my husband just fixed for me with the help of another person on here.

To prevent the phone from skipping ahead or backwards several years while changing the date/time manually, he would get close to 2016, then hit the home button to exit the setting, then go back in to scroll closer to the date, and then repeat the exit and enter into the setting again. Sounds confusing, so let me know if you need a better step by step. He was able to get to the right day and time, restart the phone, and now my phone is connected to the wifi and is stating the correct date/time.

I hope it lasts and doesn't happen again.

This actually worked for me - I had the same problems with setting the date and time manually. This was after the iPad had been restarted after a long period sitting idle and completely drained of battery. (There may be a connection to battery issues).

When exiting the settings screen by pressing the home button and then re-entering the screen the adjusted date changes from 'Tues 15 Feb 11 03'

to 'Today 11 03' - in any case, thanks for the random fix!

I've had this same issue quite a few times, and have yet to find a proper fix for it. What I've seen so far is that the iPod cannot get out to the Apple time server properly, which is why it can't detect the correct date. However, I've tried opening up the firewall on my WiFi wide open to allow everything, and it still can't get out. I've talked to Apple and they're no help with the situation. I've got almost all the symptoms as you, and I've seen this happen on dozens of iPods (we use them in a chain store setting for playing music and such).

DFU restore normally does the trick, but I've been searching for a way around that due to not having the availability of iTunes to do this at all our locations. I figured more recent versions of the iOS would help, but it doesn't look like it has so far. If only Apple would put the separate year selector back on the manual date setting, this could all go away... sort of.

I bought the 5c in green for my daughter and it developed issues with clock and alarm. Took it to Apple and they replaced it, saying it was a problem with other green 5c's. Now it's ten months later, and the replacement 5c is doing the same thing.

I actually have this issue on my mom's old phone. I've tried opening it and noticed that the part that gets hot is the bottom chips of the logic board.. though I'm not sure which one is the chip, either one of the two front ones or the mini ones on the back.

Can anyone help out? maybe I need to replace a chip that handles the time and GPS?

Now it has started to get hot and then turn off because of it. Nothing I do seems to help at all!

The iPhone is out of apple's warranty since it exactly happened just a year afer we got a replacement. This is a replacement phone that got this issue who knows how.

The old iPhone 5c had the issue of overheating the modem that not working. Sucks that the warranty had to expire at the worst time.

EDIT: now when you wat for some while, there is too much heat and stress that the iphone 5c simply just shut downs and the battery reads as "0%". The battery also gets hot as everything inside gets hot

The pressing the home button when you get near works but its long winded. If you connect your ipad/iphone to a computer/mac with itunes on it and allow the ipad to trust the pc it sync it for you

iphone does get sync with time but if it's a logic board issue the minute gets stuck and changes slower eventually becoming out of sync again.

Hi,

I'm editing my answer, because if it's not the battery or a software issue it's because of a chip on the logic board called the Y2 Crystal that needs replacing.

thats interesting. bluetooth wont turn on and the wifi icon says its connected to wifi. i still get emails on wifi and can search in safari barely. it wont fully load web pages. but i know im getting a connection because of emails that are from the current day. would this have something to do with the Y2 crystal chip on the logic board? or am i looking at more problems other that just the chip? all along with the iphone not letting me physically set a time or date. its the craziest thing not being able to set the time or date, the phone will not let me...
