From what I have read in forums around the internet, the 10.6.8 is the last version you can install in those machines because the 10.7 and above are completely 64 bits and there are no drivers for the Macbook.
In the other hand, I read something about getting the update with some tricks, but after that you have to be extremely careful with the system updates, because if an update reverts the changes you made, you would have a kernel panic.
