How to fix a stuck power button?

I recently dropped my iPad when it slipped off my lap. (Less than 2 feet.) It landed on the power button and now the button is stuck. The iPad itself works completely fine, however, I am unable to manually turn off the screen or perform a reset.

How can I unstuck the merely stuck power button?

Mine is the volume button can you help me please

my power button is not stuck but it doesn't work. Please someone help me. :(

Supermum and Hotdog…. Follow the instructions I gave above, Supermum the screen home button has volume control….. but hotdog one problem is if you turned the iPad off yourself, then it will not turn on when you plug it in unless you keep pressing the power button while it is plugged in and see if that helps. Apple tablets are just not made to be opened, usually the screen breaks or some ribbon gets broken so you end up fixing more and more. Even independent workshops will tell you this, however if you have a spare week then you could try extremely carefully to try to take the screen out and the power button should be able to be able to be replaced, put together with tiny blobs of superglue on each corner… good luck

my iPad middle Button is stuck inside the iPad how do I fix this?

My I pad has the power button stuck in the place for it but it will not come back up can some one plz help me

Put some alcohol on a tissue and start to rub the button for 5~10 minutes. Then start clicking on it. You will directly feel that the button got better. If not, Start rubbing it more. My iPad fell on a concrete floor and it got stuck. I tried this method and it worked very well.

Thanks for the rub tip with Alcohol. Worked here too!

Does 70% work?

Thank you SOO MUCH OMG it worked

It’s awesome and if you don’t have alcohol you can use water

I would not dare use the alcohol, doubt my iPad is water proof.

I have exactly the same circumstances, dropped two feet and power button stuck in.... luckily Apple has in built workarounds for this, the iPad will always power up if the battery goes, you can do a reset by holding the home button but it will only go blank then show the Apple logo in repetition, but you attach your lightning cable to charge and your iPad will turn on, also turn on your on screen home button and add functions such as screenshot, lock screen etc, and your iPad will function as normal, in fact I find it better. Mines has carried on for several months now no problems at all, bit concerned when I first did a reset with the home button but attaching the charger brought it on. Now I am to attempt to free the power button, I am not sure if I should as all is good but I experiment so first I gently filed round the power button to remove any sharp edges. Now I am going to heat up a needle, bore a tiny hole in the centre of the button, and use a tiny screw (from an old dismantlement iPhone) and hopefully screw in to pull out. Obviously not a hammer and grinder job. I don't advise opening your iPad, they are not really designed to be opened without using new parts, many have ruined their iPad trying as there is a cable which breaks if you pull the screen up too far so don't try this option... even Apple suggests replacement over repair. But if you follow the above workarounds, you should have no problem. Twice I lost sound but the reset fixed this.

OMG! Thank you, Martin Irving! My 4 year old did this to hers and you saved me!!! After an hour of trying to “dig out” the power button she was hysterical! You would think i would have thought to just “plug it in” but i did not! Seriously...saved a mommy and a frantic 4 year old! Youtube Kids is back on and all is well in the world again!

Thank you for giving me my iPad back. Its working because I read your post here. I placed the iPad on the charger and we are up and running again. Thank You!!!

I didn’t understand and also my iPad volume button doesn’t function I can’t use it

I don’t think it will work but I will try it

the metal that keeps the power button in place is most likely bent.

i would open the ipod and try to slightly bent it back - but be careful with that

use the front panel guide to open the ipad, stop at step 8 - the button is now in front of you and you can try to slightly push it outwards

good luck

I am not too sure the answer listed above would be best choice since the guide to opening the front panel suggest I don't attempt this its permanent damage to the hinges.

Any other suggestions on how I can "unstuck" the power button. Thanks.

the power button isn't more than a piece of plastic, 2 metal foils, a ribbon cable, a piece of "scotch tape" and a small metal frame - so the options are very limited

I think markus weiher was right. You need to open the case first in order set it right.

Ridiculous opinion but worth trying:

Maybe you can use SIM removal tool for trying to unstuck the button.

Hi guys, I just took some pliers (small ones) and manually pulled the power button back out. Please note: this procedure will damage the look of the power button (i.e. the aluminium will get scratches), however helped to make it functional again.

To help the process, I used some good old WD40 oil and let it soak in for a couple minutes. I am not sure wether this was necessary, but it might be useful if you are not able to do the process just with the pliers.

I just went through the same issue with my ipad air 2. Tried all the various techniques with sharp instruments ( assorted scalpel blades/exacto knives)along the sides of the button, canned air to blow out anything that might be wedged, and got nothing. Went to Apple store genius bar where they did the same procedures to no avail. The unit was no longer covered by Apple care +. The solution they offered was a brand new identical ipad for $300.00. The unit worked perfectly in all other respects. Went to Geek Squad people and they wouldn't touch it. An independent cell phone/tablet repair guy quoted a price to open it, replace the switch as well as prepared me that there is a high liklihood that the display would break during the process and thus need to be replacing as well. The other option he suggested was getting the unit turned off, ( an option found in the setting menu), a couple drops of high concentration isopropyl alchohol ( i used 91%) around the edges of the button and then tap on the button some and let it sit. I went a step further and used an ultrasonic transducer device that I had just received ( Sonic Soak to be exact)and held this on the button for about about 5 seconds . Within that 5 seconds the button was up moving and functioning normally and thus far I have seen no adverse effects of having done this

I literally immediately made a pledge for a Sonic Soak after reading this. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope it works as well for my dad's iPad as it did for yours!

Please post the link to the Sonic Soak device you are referring too.

At this suggestion I tried my wife's electric toothbrush and It loosened enough that one side of the button now works.

I came here as I have the same problem. While reading thru the comments, I had a idea, (not the best place to have id as) but I’m going to try it anyway lol I have a cheap and cheerful hot glue gun, so considering a little dab of hot glue on something like a Cocktail stick, let the glue cool and go off for a while, hopefully there may be enough adhesion to free it, if not a simple job of cleaning any residue off without marking case or buttons.

My iPad mini’s power button has been stuck for several weeks. I tried cleaning the buttons with a Clorox wipe since my sticky finger granddaughter had been playing games on it. The wipes may have cleaned the germs off but the button was still stuck. After reading the comments about the alcohol, I tried that. I really didn’t think a Q-tip and a little alcohol would do much but guess what? IT WORKED! I’m a happy grandma. Thank you for all the comments. It takes a village. :)

Faced the same issue. Apple service centre told to replace. Thank you so much for the alcohol rub technique. I saved my 75000 rs.

You will probably need to open up the iPad (you can find a guide here for your iPad) and then remove the power button. Reinstall the power button and it shouldn’t be stuck anymore.
