Display fuzzy and Bootcamp

Hallo, I have a iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2308 with Bootcamp: the computer starts with Windows 7.

When switching on, there is a problem with the display (I've seen this post with similar problem but I can't found the solution: Display fuzzy, stuck at start screen) and after 2-3 seconds the monitor becomes black (but the computer is on).

I think it is the GPU... maybe overheating?

I would like to know if it is possible to change the GPU (or if it is integrated) and, since that I need the data inside the hard drive, if I can connect the iMac to an external monitor for now: I tried it but anything appeared, the external monitor remained in stand-by. I don't know if external monitor works with Bootcamp.

I'd like to try to boot the computer with OS X but I don't know how to do that because display fuzzy.

How can I transfer data from hard drive with Bootcamp Windows 7 to a new PC Windows 7 (I need Windows because my old father doesn't know how to use OS X)?

Maybe to repair the GPU is too expensive and it is better to change the computer with a new PC Windows but I don't know how to transfer data.

Have you tried connecting an external monitor to your system? Also do you have an external bootable drive with OS-X to see if that works?

Yes, I've tried with an external monitor but VGA Apple cable doesn't work with Windows 7, so the external monitor in not seen by the iMac. I found a post online with the same problem with the VGA cable and they suggested to buy another type of VGA cable to connect iMac with windows 7 to an external monitor.

I don't have an external bootable drive with OS X.... :(

It is painful when you can't make and that remains just an inch away. From your description, I see the same thing you see. Due to the heat impact, your GPU failed. You can simply swap the GPU. Repair shops charge somewhere between $299 to $599 depending on the VRAM size. It's worth replacing GPU if you wanna make good out of a Mac.

But, if your concern is just the PC stuff in that Mac - I mean the data, you can simply transfer that data using one of the two options available.

First option: mount your iMac in Target Disk Mode over to another Mac and pull the data out the way you want using firewire 800.

Second option: tear apart your iMac and unmount your drive from brackets and mount it with another Mac to obtain data from the drive.

If you do not have any other Mac available, ship your iMac to us and see if we can be a help with you. Also ship out an external drive so that we can transfer data from your iMac. We will give you that service for free should you recycle your iMac.

@ Mary - Do you have a friend with a Mac? If you do you could try to setup your system in Target Mode and via a cable connection between the systems access the files on your system to back it up onto another drive. Make sure you have two different drives or partition the drive so you have both a place to store the Mac files (Journaled HFS+) and a second place for the Windows files (FAT32).

Using the same setup (Target Mode) you could try starting up your friends Mac off of your hard drive. If your friends screen is also fuzzy (not sharp) you know the issue is not hardware but a corruption within your Windows setup. Rebooting your friends Mac getting back to OS-X on it you can then run Disk Utility to try to fix the corruption using Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. You may need to run if a few times to fix all of the errors. You still may need to re-install Windows to fix the display drivers which I suspect is the real issue here.

The last thing here is to get a USB thumb drive (16GB or larger) and then using your friends Mac format it with OS-X Disk Utility, then from your friends Mac using the OS-X installer from the App Store install OS-X onto the thumb drive and copy over to it a copy of the OS installer. That way you have the needed setup to test your system on your own as well as have a means to recover the Mac OS-X.

Thank you very much for your help.

I opened the computer and I unmount the hard drive. Then I connected it to a macbook with a usb adapter for hard disk and the macbook has seen it as an external hard drive.

I could copy all directories on the macbook and all files are safe now.

I thought the hard drive would not be recognized but it was, fortunately!

I think I will buy a pc windows with windows 7 and copy all files there (it is for my old father that doesn't know how to use OS X).
