Smartphones 'lighting' concept design project

Hello!!!!

As an industrial designer and follower of this incredibly informative website, I have for some time been considering an independent design project utilising disused/ broken smartphones in a 'recycling' manner, to develop a 'lighting' concept product.

Essentially the idea is to use the available display screen as a light source (in-situ), connect in an array and form a 'chandelier', or table lamp for example, and be reconnected and powered by AC.

Personally lacking a solid understanding of electronics will hinder this project, as will the serious lack of being able to source such smartphones (however still trying to remain confident after having already exhausted possibly 30-40 potential local Australian sources) ;(

At this initial stage, may I simply ask, would this concept idea be plausible, in essentially

connecting an AC supply and/or external battery to illuminate the display screen of perhaps two dozen plus smartphones, as a means of 'recycling'; finding a second life for such products and avoiding landfill?

Thank you so much, kind regards, Jack

I suppose it should be possible. The issues that you may run into is powering different LED backlights from different panels. The power requirements might be different. I would suggest that you contact a contributor to this forum who specializes in LCD's. Check for Israel on here and click on his company STS Parts link below his Avatar.
