Caps lock and num lock leds blink continuously, can't get to bios

I have a Compaq CQ56 and I have tried different methods suggested here to solve the blinking Caps Lock issue to no avail. I have tried the methods below:-

1) GPU Reflow using hairdrier on Max for 3 mins.

2) Removing Batt and Ram and pressing power button for 30 seconds.

3) Removing CMOS batt and trying to switch it on.

4) Switching ram modules and even brand new ones on alternate ram slots to no avail.

Please advise...

First thing to do (as suggested by HP also) is: turn off your PC, unplug the charger, take out the battery, then open the RAM slot.

Take out the RAM and disconnect the wireless card.

Press the power button at that point, and keep it pressed for like 30 sec.

Reassemble it all and try to boot.

It may be a power problem or BIOS failure. Try this out; afterwards, it should be OK.

If that does not work, the worst scenario is that you just reset your BIOS from CMOS by taking out the small battery behind the RAM modules for a few seconds.

Hope the info helped.

It worked perfectly. Thanks!!!

Thank you so much. My computer has been dead for over a month. Tried what you said and its back.So simple I couldn't believe it.

Sorry. This fix got my led's blinking properly. Then I held down the four arrow keys and turned on lappy. This got my screen back. Don't know why but it worked.

That's Work. Thanks a lot.

press with you palm on the center of the keyboard especially at the area 'T,Y,U,I,O,7,8,9'. This is due to the GPU socket loose.

Give it a little TLC. Kinda like administering CPR chest compression's but, much more lightly and gentle. Pressing with you palm on the keyboard area keys T,Y,U,I,O,7,8,9. It really works!

Check your ram modules.

It is either loose or they are dead.

Remove the Ram modules, wipe it with a lint free cloth, put it back in and see if the laptop is working.

If not you will have to replace the ram module(s).

I have been a tech for over 40 years, and I'm telling you that overheating the laptop is NOT going to cause the solder to melt, or the joint to work. In fact, when troubleshooting a thermal problem, the opposite is true. "Cold solder" connections FAIL as the unit heats up. To isolate the problem, a freon spray is used to cool suspected areas to see if the problem disappears. So all these posts all over the forums regarding this machine that claim overheating the unit causes bad solder joints to to reconnect temporarily are WRONG ! I have no doubt that this method does sometimes get the unit to temporarily boot, but not for the reasons they claim. I do not know the reason for the original failure, nor why overheating the unit gets it to boot, but I suspect a fan issue, or some other error message being sent to the cpu that stops the start process. One of my ram cards slot is extremely loose, and the machine doesn't react differently if there is 1,2, or no ram cards installed. I will continue trying to isolate the problem, but I suggest if you want to recover data on the HDD, get an external hook up and do it right, not by frying you laptop further !

you are most likely correct and this ty0pe of fix (if it works the first time) should never be counted onto work again. Time to get a new laptop ! :)

I am a tech of about the same number of years and I'm here to tell you that it will. It doesn't technically "melt" the solder, but over time, extreme overheating and then cooling off quickly, causes the cheap solder that HP uses to crack and that's a fact. The solder that HP and many other manufacturers use, is substandard and melts completely at temps that would not begin to melt any decent electrical solder. The cracking causes the GPU to heat up expediently hotter due to the failing connection, until the connection is finally lost.

I have examined the boards under a microscope and you can clearly see the stress cracks. Hence the reason that the only way to fix these machines is to reball the solder on the GPU and add an appropriate thickness copper shim to the GPU, so that it has ample pressure applied and is conducting heat as efficiently as possible.

I have done this to HP laptops numbering in the hundreds and if the GPU is not too damaged from heat, it almost always solves that problem.

For three blinks: Remove battery for few mints and reinsert it. During boot process press shift+ctrl+alt. It worked in my laptop (cq40) many a times. Although it is not my idea. I read it somewhere (can't recall). But it worked. Just removing battery and pressing any other buttons did not work in my laptop.

For four blinks: I removed RAM and inserted it again. Laptop started.

You have burnt out the Graphics chip on it, i am amazed it has lasted this long as these model are prone to gpu failure.

Simply put.

Under the gpu there are small balls or solder prob 200 of them and a few have melted and joined together shorting out the chip or the heat has lifted a section of the chip, same result dead gpu.

Wrapping it in a sweater just heats up the solder until it turns back to a semi fluid and the solder balls reflow back to the correct position.

Pressing on the keyboard also does exactly the same thing as in that instance the chip has lifted and you are just pressing it back down.

Eventually the solder will fail completely as HP are renowned for using cheap chips and even cheaper solder ( other manufacturers are also available).

You need to have the gpu reballed or replaced, NOT reflowed.

The HP DV, TX, CQ and now the G6 and G7 series all suffer from gpu failure.

I'm a retired auto mechanic and would rather repair my own stuff. Computer's are no exception, so any help would be appreciated. My home PC acted like this an after removing the RAM, cleaning the ends with an eraser and reinstalling it has been working fine since (that was three years ago). However, going the same with this HP C-52 Compaq Presario just isn't cutting it.

I tried removing the Batt for a few min's, reinstalling, booting up, nothing, caps look just blinks steadily. Then I tried unplugging the unit, removing batt, removing the RAM, reinstalling, rebooting, still blinking. Tried again all the above, but disconnected the internal batt, reinstalled everything, rebooted, again nothing.

In each scenario I hadn't removed or disconnected the WIFI card. I don't know where it is. Also the SD card, where is it located> Any help is appreciated.

On my HP8530w, the capslock and numlock leds blinked 3 times, periodically. It was miraculously solved by the first proposed methods: removing batter, ac power, bios-battery AND wireless card (under the keyboard, near letter B) and pressing the power button for 30 seconds. After reassembling, the bios seemed to be reconfigured and booted normally afterwards!

I have a Compaq Presario CQ61 that was upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago, which is when my problems started. My Num and Caps lock keep blinking w/o end and no POST beeps. I tried removing the RAM but no POST. I tried powering the laptop with only the AC adapter and then with only the battery and still only the flashing Num and Caps lock. What finally worked was holding down the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys at the same time and then powering on the laptop. It booted right up and began installing Windows Updates. I'm wondering if the Updates had something to do with its behavior. Considering taking this laptop back to Windows 7 with a clean install and getting rid of this crappy Windows 10 once and for all.

I found that the memory slot (memory bank) 0 - under the very first slot you see when you open - did not work. I just removed the memory from that slot and let the only one that worked fine and had the biggest memory inside the other slot. The notebook booted okay. But I did not find why just one memory slot stopped working... I will look at the motherboard to see the connections (bus) to the processor and check if there is a short circuit or something like that. Hope this helps.

check the blink codes, if the blink codes are a sequence of 1 and a long delay. that decodes to the CPU not funtional. it is either the cpu itself that is having the problem or the CPU socket is not working. in that sence you need to replace one or the other.

If it comes on and doesn't do anything but stay on the black screen, and caps lock keeps flashing, a weird trick to get it to come back on is to overheat it.

Wrap it up with sweaters or leave it on in your bag for about 30 mins and it will overheat and turn itself of due to the CPU overheating. Then it may come back on.

Its not a permanent fix, but it works for me. I use Sleep instead of Hibernate now and the trick works more often.

Let me start by saying NEVER use a hairdryer for a reflow job, it will never get hot enough, you cannot control the spread of the heat and it can cause damage to the surface of the motherboard.

Understand you may have made things worse.

Have you tried to power it on without the battery inserted?

Cmos battery should be removed for at least 5 minutes.

If the Cmos battery pops in you should consider replacing it altogether. Most main board will not boot if the battery is dead.

Remove battery and power plug hold down power button for 1 minute, keeping it held then insert the power jack to the laptop and see if it boots.

Did you try to power it with hdd removed?

Try to rotate ram. Remove Ram 1 and place Ram 2 into slot 1 and boot, if the same. Remove Ram 2 from Slot 1 and insert Ram 1 in Slot 2 and boot.

Is there a system to the flashing lights? e.g Blink 2, blink 1?

Try these 1st and see if it helps. Let me know how you get on.

Glad that some of these fixes work. My problem, however, was a bad GPU connection after a hot summer. After trying everything else, I covered the vents with a cloth and let my G62 heat up for about 10 minutes - turn the computer off then on and it booted properly (GPU connection expand a bit & connects). Knowing this, I ordered an exact match motherboard for $50 from an ebay site and replaced it using a well-done youtube video for the G62. Learned a lot. Cleaned the fan and used high-quality thermal paste for CPU & GPU. It took some time and patience, but the computer is better than new. It helped that HP G62 series is common & MB was exact match shipped from China for free. I am no longer fearful of taking a notebook computer apart. I can give specifics to anyone who wants to proceed. - Peter

I have an even older version. I have a C-52 Compaq Presario and the caps lock just steadily blinks, screen completely black, WIFI light off.

Tried just about everything except ed disconnecting the WIFI card an/or theSD card.

I haven't the foggiest idea where either of those cards are located? The RAM card are easy as is the internal battery, but the WIFI and SD card I can't find just by removing the RAM cover.

I’ve encountered similar issue with an older HP Elitebook 2540p - the notebook wouldn’t go to BIOS and restarted itself every 10 seconds or so. The LEDs blinked during each cycle. When I replaced CMOS battery (CR2032 type, it’s hidden under the keyboard), the notebook works normally again.
