when I took my phone out of charging it just shuts off

Can you still plug the phone into a charger and see the charging LED light up, or can you see the battery logo on the screen indicating its trying to charge? If there is no charge LED indicator or battery symbol on the screen then you may need to replace the usb charge port.

If you can plug the phone into the charger and the charge LED indicator lights up but is flashing orange then this means the battery is not properly communicating with the phone. Or if you see a battery icon on the screen but it has a red exclamation point in it then that means the same as the flashing orange light (battery not communicating properly). Sometimes if the phone has been dropped, the battery's flex cable connection on the motherboard may be either loosened enough to cause this problem or could have possibly been damaged. The battery itself may be faulty as well which could cause this problem. Try replacing the battery if reseating the battery cable connection on the motherboard does not fix the problem, or if you see a small tear in the battery cable.

If you can see the charge LED indicator light up and flash red then this means the battery has a low charge. If you have tried charging the phone with more than one charger that you know is in good working condition and the charge LED indicator still flashes red after leaving on the charger for a few hours then the battery has likely reached the end of its life. Try replacing the battery if this is the case.

If you have been using a cheaper third party charger to charge the phone instead of the original HTC charger than there is also the possibility that it may have been supplying the wrong voltage to properly charge the battery and may have either damaged the battery or the charging IC. If a new battery, and/or a usb charge port does not fix the issue then there could be an issue with the charging IC or power management IC on the motherboard. This is not as likely as a failing battery but it possible especially if using a charger not properly rated for the phone. If this is the case you may need to replace the motherboard or have it repaired by a professional.

If you have a red flashing charge LED indicator when plugged into a wall charger than you might want to try using a usb charge cable for a PC. Connect the cable to the PC and Phone and let it try and charge for 15 minutes or more. If the battery is still not charging then try unplugging the phone from the usb cable. Now with the power button held down plug the phone back into the usb cable and continue to hold the power button for about 30 seconds to a minute to see if it can get the LED charge indicator to turn solid red. If it does turn solid red then let the battery try and charge for awhile and try powering on the phone.

There are numerous things that could cause this to happen and I listed what I believe is a little more common, so if none of these solutions help let me know and I can help you further troubleshoot the issue.
