Does a smartphone turns on without the screen?

I was wondering if a smartphone, in general, turns on without the screen. I have a Moto X 2nd Gen and it seems it doesn't turn on without screen anymore.. But could also be the motherboard.. I dont know.

If it is out of warranty, you may want to pop the screen off using an iOpener and this guide: iOpener Instructions. You may want to reseat the display connector.
