Grey question marked hard drive clicking and not backed up

Can i still recover data from hard drive after it has started clicking and has been removed and before it was removed, it would not power up due to grey flashing question mark on folder. It had 10.8.6 os and likely ran out of memory

Sounds like your hard drive has failed. You can hook it up to a USB Universal Adapter or external enclosure to see if it can be recovered. You will need a new hard drive. This has nothing to do with the RAM. You can also try booting up from your original system installation DVD. Go to the second page pull down menu and go to Disk Utilities and see if it can be repaired.
