top two led lights are blinking underneath hard drive 1-diagnosis?

in the upper left hand corner there are two blinking led . accompanied by a clicking sound. it is the top two lights of what appears to be four lights. Startups and shutdowns are erratic . If I pull plug to stop the led's from blinking,then I cannot start up right away- after maybe five minutes the blinking returns and then I can start up again.. Also, it will not go to sleep with the power button fading in and out- it just shuts down

romegio, start by checking what Apple suggest for those errors."When connecting the Mac Pro to AC power, verify that the LEDs for OVTMP CPUA and OVTMP CPUB briefly flash red (less than 0.5 sec). The LEDs are located under hard drive bay 1 on the backplane board. If they do not illuminate briefly, there is an issue with either the power supply or the backplane board. Generally speaking, power supplies, because of their nature, can be affected by issues more than other modules. If you suspect a power supply has failed,verify it in another Mac Pro (Early 2009), if available, before replacing any modules.

Note: The OVTMP CPUA and OVTMP CPUB LEDs on a properly functioning Mac Pro will also momentarily flash red immediately after the Mac Pro is disconnected from AC power."

Intermittent Shutdown

• Computer intermittently shuts down, restarts, sleeps

• Fans run fast

• Slow computer performance prior to intermittent shutdown, restart, sleep

1. Verify shutdown/restart/sleep issue does not occur with a known good AC Mains power source. Rule out customer environment such as defective uninterruptable power supplies. Rule out power generators which may produce noisy power, straining the computer’s internal power supply and causing issues.

Suspect unstable AC Mains power source. Using an alternate AC Mains power source resolves issue.

Go to step 2

2. Remove all non critical internal and external peripherals, i.e. AirPort, Bluetooth, PCIe cards, external USB drives etc. Verify shutdown/restart/sleep issue does not occur Yes Shutdown/restart/sleep issue does not occur when internal and external peripherals removed. Troubleshoot suspect peripherals.

Go to step 3

3. Verify if fans are running fast.

Yes

Go to “Fast/Failed Fans” Flow

No

Fans running at normal speed.

Go to step 4.

4. Reset SMC and verify computer functions correctly and does not intermittently shutdown/ restart/sleep.

Yes

Corrupt SMC State causing power stability issues. Resetting SMC has resolved the issue.

No

Go to step 5

5. Attempt to boot from original or compatible install media, or from a known good external hard drive with compatible OS X installed. Verify computer stays ON without any intermittent shutdown/restart/sleep.

Yes

Computer power remains stable and does not intermittently shutdown/restart/sleep. Clean install customer HD with compatible OS. Perform all Software Updates if required.

No

Go to step 5

6. Disconnect all internal boot volumes. The computer should not discover any boot volumes, and start to flashing Folder? Verify if the computer continues to intermittently shutdown/restart/sleep

Yes

Computer continues to shutdown/restart/sleep. Refer to Minimum Configuration Testing troubleshooting: Remove all modules and peripherals not critical to operation. Verify computer functions correctly and does not shutdown/reset/sleep unexpectedly. Then reinstall modules one at a time and restest until symptom returns. Verify if the last module added is not the cause by removing again.

No

Run Apple Service Diagnostic from an external USB drive. Suggest to also go to Minimum Configuration"

thank you for this useful info. I have tested as much of this as possible. Here are my results:

1.when I plug in computer there is no blinking led.

2.when computer shuts down,it cannot be started again right away until about 15 minutes-at which time the two led's start blinking, then it is possible to start up.

3.no blinking led after pulling plug.

4.will not start up off external boot drive, but it will restart off external.

5.computer stays on when computer is set to "never" sleep.

6. did remove wifi card.

" until about 15 minutes" this makes me think of bad caps on the the PSU. Have you checked that out?

not sure what bad caps on psu mean but I will look this up best I can. The thing about the 15 min. is that it seems to be inconsistent. Sometimes when I shut down and push the start button,it starts right up.. but if I wait 5 min. it won't start up..then I have to wait for the blinking led's before startup is possible.. thank you for your time. much appreciated.

bad capacitors on a PSU can cause shut downs at any time. Usually if the power demand is higher it will shut down quicker.

ok,but it never shuts down while in use. Also, when I unplug the unit,it takes upward of an hour to be able to start up, which is when the two led's start blinking and accompanied by a clicking sound. thanks again....oh,but if it is bad capacitors then does that mean i would have to get a whole new mother board,given the fact that I don't know how to fix or diagnose this problem?

I'm having the inverso problem. The Mac Pro 2009 2.66 does blink the two RED LED (OVTMP CPUA and OVTMP CPUB) but does not start for whatever reason (it does not turn on).

I've slimed down to a minimum configuration and nothing.

Any help?
