Battery replacement gone bad on iPhone 4s

Hi Guys, A friend who promised to replace the battery, couldn't replace it properly. Now he is saying that the connector on the logic is bad and came off. He glued it but the phone is doing crazy things. Following is the symptoms that I noticed on the phone.

1. No battery recognition when disconnected from the power cable. when I press the power button, it does not respond at all.

2. Turns on when connected to the AC power and indicates that it has 100% of the battery.

3. Restarts every few minutes when connected to the AC power.

4. Wi-Fi Does not turn on through the control panel or through the settings menu when connected to the AC power. wi-fi is greyed out in the setting section.

Please help as getting the data out of the phone is a priority for me.

Thanks

Good Morning,

So after reviewing the following videos,

1. From pugeotsoundelectronics.com

https://youtu.be/264da0dip68

2. From icrack

https://youtu.be/aSUirUBmsZs

3. From Kyle and Jessa at iFixit

https://youtu.be/Dn_DS2c_VtE

I decided to open the phone one more time and look at the connector. No doubt, that the connector is the problem. It turns out that the battery connector was broken and the friend tried to glue it. The connector is partially broken and is still stuck to the logic board. See the attached pictures below.

So now the question is, how can

1. I remove the remaining segment of the plastic stuck to the logic board.

2. Check that there is no damage in the circuit (i.e. connectivity test to confirm that the circuit is still good and that glue has not created any shorts).

3. And then attempt to re-solder a new connector, without disassembling the entire phone and get the logic board out.

Any thoughts will be very helpful?

I saw that you sent an email to iPad Rehab about this, so I will answer you here.

This is likely repairable, all of your issues are divided into a few categories--

No battery---this will cause the iPhone not to boot except on AC power, and the lack of info about battery status to the board will make the board assume that the battery is on fire and therefore best to shut this puppy down--hence your reboot.

Searching---this is most likely a simple problem, the phone doesn't know the correct date/time after power disconnect so you need to reset the date/time then toggle Airplane mode for the phone to give itself permission to find a signal. However, it is very common on iPhone 4s to also have pry damage on the edge of the board near the battery connector that rips off some components that will also cause searching no signal

Wifi--The board should still connect to WiFi even with the wrong time/date. A common problem in iPhone 4s is greyed out WiFi (as opposed to just not being able to see a wifi signal). Greyed out WiFi is a failure of the WiFi chip itself.

We would be happy to help you with your data recovery, I will have my business manager answer your quote request by email from iPad Rehab.

NJS, 75% of the issues you listed are related to " He glued it " this. Replace the battery connector by properly soldering it back on. Check the smaller components around the connector to ensure they are still there and intact. The greyed out WiFi can be related to a failed WiFi IC, antenna issues and issues with the date/time settings. Unless you fix the battery connector first, you will not get to the WiFi repair at all.

Following is the symptoms that I noticed on the phone.

1. No battery recognition when not connected to the power cable, and turns off immediately.

2. Tries to boot up, the apple symbol shows up but turns off immediately and tries turning on again.

3. Turns on when connected to the AC power and indicates that it has 100% of the battery.

4. Restarts every 3 to 4 minutes when connected to the AC power.

5. Wi-Fi Does not turn on through the control panel or through the settings menu when connected to the AC power.

6. The phone keeps searching for the network.

Please help as getting the data out of the phone is a priority for me.

Yes, I would a still suspect the battery as number one culprit, with missing components below the connector (pry damage) as number two. Where to fix it depends on your geographic location.

Thank you, @oldturkey03. I am in Boston, any thoughts ?

Looks like you already contacted this member.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news for you, but there is nothing you can do for your iPhone.

OK, Thanks for the reply. Is there something that can be done to get the data backed up ?

Does the iPhone startup at all?

If it does you may be able to get it backed up using iTunes but if it doesn't then no there is nothing that can be done.

The phone only starts on, when connected to an AC power. It does not work while connected to a windows laptop.
