Replaced SSD Not Appearing on Desktop

I completed the installation on a replacement SSD purchased from iFixit and rebooted from a clone of the original drive on an external USB disk. I tried to clone that back onto the new SSD but that failed and now the new SSD does not appear on the desktop and does not appear in Disk Utility. Its not being recognised when I boot up. Do you have any ideas how I can get it to reappear - I assume the format is lost so is there a way to reformat?

Hi,

I assume you're talking about Mac OS (Disk Utility).

Mac OS could be a little painful sometimes with unrecognized filesystems.

An easy try you could give is to attach the new SSD to a Win PC and, if recognized, formatting in exFAT.

If the format succeeds, you can attach back to Mac. The SSD should be now recognized.

Otherwise, you could boot up in Apple's Recovery Mode, open a shell window and see if any drive is listed under /dev/sda. In that case you could be able to format from shell.

When cloning HDDs be sure that starting partition is equal or less then destination's

You want to use Windows software on a possible Apple priority drive? Find out his exact machine and which SSD was installed. Is this a mSATA? What's the bus speed of the machine? What's the speed of the disk or stick? Get the facts before you give an answer. Why is the drive being replaced, were there problems with the old one?

Simon, thanks for the answer - I will try recovery mode.

This is the internal SSD of the MBA so I can't attach it to a PC or use Windows software.

Whilst I was trying to restore from the cloned drive the format may have become corrupted and it is not being recognised by OSX.

As this is the system drive I want to be able to install Mac OSX onto it - either from the external drive the that holds the clone of the previous drive or from a USB instal (either will do) but I can't do that until I can actually see it when I boot up.

So I guess I need to reformat it but as I can't see it in Disk Utility or TechTool Pro I was thinking a needed a terminal commanded or similar to reformat it.

I will try recovery mode.
