Will the replacement instructions work if my screen is pulverized into thousands of pieces? It doesn't seem I'll be able to pry and suction cup anything. Would there be alternative instructions?

First have a good working area because that glass is going to get everywhere. If you don't have experience repairing iPads stay away from the metal tools, because you will go in to far and cause damage to the LCD. Use lots of heat and plastic tools or even playing cards. Those severely broken screen are a pain but go slow and lots of heat.

Yeah it will work. You will need to get something like an iSeasmo tool to get inbetween the frame and glass. You might also scratch the metal frame(probably screwed up anyway).
Please make sure your LCD screen still works fine, because otherwise you will need to replace the entire display and glass digitizer.

Jake, thanks. Oddly, the LCD look fine thru the haze of broken glass. I will look for the tool you suggested.

I successfully completed my repair, today. It really wasn't too difficult. Managing and removing pulverized glass was the most tedious part. Both Jake's and DC LifeTech's suggestions were helpful... lot's of heat, glass safety measures and a strong device for cleaning glass from the edges... I used a very good sharp pen knife (I'm an olde-timer!)
Due to extensive glass pulverization... the center of the broken glass was removed 'close' to the edges. Then, I slowly removed the remaining glass from the edges with lot's of heat.
The kit I purchased (iPad Air Front Glass/Digitizer Touch Panel Full Assembly ) had a new home bottom. So, I didn't need to be careful to conserve the old one.
I did the repair while pleasantly listening on radio to Martin Brodeur’s no. 30 being retired... raised to rafters at "The Rock" (Prudential Center) .... the whole ceremony... and, part of the subsequent match with the Edmonton Oilers....
