Unable to recongnize SSD through SATA connector

Hi guys!

So I just replaced my HHD with a solid 240GB Hyperx Savage from Kingston and something funny is happening. I am able to create the OS partition and clone my HHD into the SSD and when conected through the USB port, my Mac recognizes it. However, when using the SATA connector, it just loads the apple icon bar and stalls forever....

I've tried the trim thing with the Sensei app and I've also tried to install El Capitan from the Recovery mode. None would work. Same problem all the time. I read there might be a compatibility issue with Macs mid 2009 and I'm just thinking this could be affecting the mid 2010 as well?

Any ideas would be welcome....

Thanks!! But, is that a no no on the SSD? I mean, not sure where exactly I have to look to see the compatibility...if any.

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) and HyperX Savage SSD.

Did you change your data cable? Did it help you?

First you'll need to check your systems firmware. Follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. Make sure its at least at the level shown in the T/N, you may have something newer which is OK.

Make sure you are booting the system up internally with your original HD or using your external connection with either the old HD or your new SSD. Once upgraded if needed go into the system profile to check the SATA ports data rate. It should now be SATA III (6.0 Gb/s).

I suspect your old drive was only a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive (the original Apple drives were only SATA II in this series).

What happens here it the data flow is too fast for your original cable to handle running at the higher data rate. Thats why the HD works (SATA II) and the SSD fails (SATA III).

You need a new SATA cable as your system came with a SATA II cable. Here's the correct cable: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable.

Hi Dan,

I've been doing a little research and my laptop is mid 2010, so I found this SATA cable instead that I am not sure it's the same as the one you sent me or if it would work the same way but being compatible with my macbook pro 13''. MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2010) Hard Drive Cable

This seems a little confusing because I can see my model number "A1278" in the list of compatibles from the link you sent but then it takes me elsewhere when I enter all the specifications about my processor speed.

Can you please let me know if I could use the mid 2009-mid 2010 SATA cable with the HyperX Savage SSD?

The original cable supports SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) devices, the one I pointed you to supports SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) devices. Your HyperX Savage SSD is a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) device. You need the one I give you the link to.

Hi Dan, I heard that this Cable has a little different mark for the screws, and I will have to let some of them unplugged, Do you confirm that? My macbook and SSD model is exactly ones from this post. Thanks in advance

Hi Dan,

Is there any difference between the parts: 923-0104, 923-0741, 821-1480-A 821-2049-A. Example between 923-0104 and 821-1480-A?

I bought the cable that you recommend but it is the 821-1480-A. However, I didn't see a speed increase in the link to the hard disk on my macbook pro mid 2010.

It remained at 3 gigabits which does not allow me to install OS-X Yosemite and installation stagnates when there are 12 minutes. Amusingly, it is the same SSD HyperX Savage 480 GB SATA III.

Any idea that can be? please help.

Apple over time improves parts as well as use different suppliers. So you'll often find multiple part numbers on some parts. The trick is to find the newest P/N so you get the better product (most of the time).

In addition Apple also has discreet parts as well as sub assembly parts. So the part you want maybe available discreetly or part of a sub assembly, so you do need to watch out which P/N you use.

So, to answer your question review this: Hard Drive Cable w/ IR Sensor for MacBook Pro 13" Unibody. Here you can see what cable goes to which system by Apples repair manuals. This is not to say these are the best part for the given system! Most of the time its like for like, as the assumption is you're not altering from the factory supplied equipment. Here we are! As you want to maximize the system SATA port. So we need to use the better cable P/N 923-0104.

Lastly, the better cable may require some alteration of the system frame to make room for the thicker part or use only one mount point. So you do need to be careful to make sure things fit cleanly.

Hi men. I have this problem too. I also bought new sata cable, but it didn't help me. I think that cable it is not problem. Our problem it is new series of controller which uses in HyperX savage. Because when I used old ssd OCZ it worked fine.
