Is the digitizer part of the lcd?

I'm asking out of curiosity here. It appears that the digitizer is behind the LCD on the iPhone 5s, but has traces running through the LCD. Is this true, or am I imagining things?

Thank you all for the answers! Now I'm having a hard time choosing the one to accept! I would like to tell my story to give you an understanding of why I am doing all of this myself. I purchased a broken iPhone 5s to replace the iPod touch 4 I had. I replaced the charge port, and had a working phone. My brother-in-law wanted his charge port replaced so I replaced it for him and caused long screw damage. So, I decided to get into iPhone repair, and get all of the things needed for board repair. The way the deal was caused me to replace the scratched glass and sell it as refurbished on Ebay once I did the BSOD repair. While separating the glass, the polarizer got cut in two. Thinking it was part of the digitizer, I tried to get the digitizer off, figuring it was similar to the iPod touch with a separate digitizer. So I'll try again on one from Ebay. The point is to learn, and maybe start a business after I repair friends phones free for awhile. Hopefully that clears up some obvious misunderstandings. God bless!

Front glass is just glass. The LCD has touch sensors built in, there is no separate digitizer.

front glass is certainly not the digitizer. if your touch screen and LCD are working fine , you can indeed replace the glass only. however leave that in the hands of the guys that do this full time. not a job to do yourself

Coming from a refurbishing background the digitizer is not the glass. Check out this blog post if you would like to go a little bit more in depth https://stsparts.us/blogs/lcdrefurbishin...

i believe the digitizer itself is just the glass, running in sync with the lcd screen

I'm not sure I know what you mean. You aren't saying the front glass is the digitizer, are you? All I can guess is that you are saying that the glass part of the LCD is the digitizer. But the digitizer is in fact, not replaceable by anyone, Right?

the front glass is the digitizer, and it can be replaced using the right tools. you can replace the glass portion using a heat gun, and loosening the adhesive

Well.... I know for a fact that the front glass is not the digitizer on this iPhone. I'm glad someone actually responded though. Thank you.

travis is correct. the digitizer is part of the glass and is glued to the lcd. You can try doing glass only but the combined digitizer/LCD assembly is very inexpensive right now - probably $30 and not worth the effort to try and unglue and reglue new glass.

OK, so I am corrected. But how does the digitizer connector connect to the glass? And how can it be reconnected without knowing it when you replace the glass? Also my plan is not just to get the phone working, but to learn as much as I can in the process. I need to do a BSOD long screw repair as well.

Hey there Josiah. ;d

Basically The Digitiser and the LCD screen are separate just like any other iDevice, however.. the iPhone 5, 5S, 6, 6S and so on (as with some iPods?) have their LCD and Digitiser surfaces GLUED together.

The glue in question is called LOCA, which stands for Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive.

This glue is basically poured on top of the LCD surface while being held in a mold then the digitiser is placed on top. Like a sammich! <3

The glue is then set dry by using a UV handheld lamp over the course of roughly 20-30 seconds? (unsure how long).

This practice can be successful with a few minor impurities, such as glue bleeding back under the LCD panel (which looks like a blotch at the edge of the screen) or foreign artifacts such as your own hair being trapped underneath. x'3

So to answer your question, in layman's terms; YES! Technically, NO!

When you buy a screen replacement, the LCD and Digitiser usually come pre-bound, as it saves quite a lot of hassle. However you CAN buy the two pieces separate if you've got the guts to run the game and assemble it all yourself. ;p

I hopes I helped! :3

Edit: Oops! It seems I've answered a bit late as a user had edited / deleted their post and bumped a month old thread to the top of the board. >;c Marie!
