Why is my fan running high but it's not registering any rpms?

The old fan on my laptop ran really loud, like a jet engine, so I thought I should buy a new one and replace it. It also didn't seem to really cool the laptop down.

It would always stay above 175-200*F. Well, I decided to replace it with one bought through iFixit.

Except now this one is always running really loud, like the last, except this time I can't change the RPM control. It is only registering at 000 rpm. But, it's cooling down the laptop.

I just don't know how I can get it to be quieter. Can someone help please?

Can you open the main Window of the App (just above the Preferences menu option). Hopefully it shows the sensors otherwise you'll need to buy it. This newer version appears to show less in the trial version than past versions ;-{

Sorry :-( You're still in the menu bar pull down.

The main window option is what you need to select from the pull down. Count up six menu items from the bottom of the pull down it will then open up a full window. Even there you might see the temps with the word Trial which sadly is something new in this release. You'll need to buy the app. But I promise you it's worth it!

For starters I would download this App: TG Pro so you can see the thermal sensors and the fans. Post a screenshot of main screen shows you in your question (go into edit mode).

We really need a clue on which model you have to guide you further.

Well, the screenshot shows the fan is not working and the CPU is running very high.

So we need to try cleaning the fan or replace it. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 Fan Replacement. And here is the needed part: MacBook 13" Unibody Fan.

To clean the fan you'll need a can of can'ed air and a small soft paint brush. The idea here is to use the brush to loosen the dusk and junk and the can'ed air to blow it away. Be careful you don't spin up the fan to fast as you can damage it, you'll also want to blow out the heatsink fins. See if that works first. Otherwise you'll need to replace it.

Agreed about the sensor. Run the AHT from your original system installation disk. Insert disk and start up holding down D key.

I already replaced it with one from iFixit, I picked a used one. Maybe I should get a new one? It's still running loudly and why I can't control the fan speed.

I just cleaned the fan and it's still loud. I don't know why it's running so loud!!!

I guess you need a new fan unit. The fact the temps came down when you unloaded apps is a good sign the issue is just the fan.

Hopefully, replacing it solves things. If not you may have damaged the logic board when the fan connector is located.

Frankly, the system is designed to deal with things here and it does a very good job at it. I don't recommend people over-ride the SMC system. More often than not I see more harm to the system when people bypass SMC.
