upgrade CPU E7600 to E8600

Hi,

I'm still using my late 2009 27" iMac for simple tasks.

The EMC 2309 was offered by Apple with either a E7600 or E8600 CPU (both Core 2 Duo) 3.06 or 3.33 GHz

Today the E8600 CPU chip is very cheap (about $30) I've read that it's about 20% faster than the E7600

As it was offered by Apple, and knowing that the processor is socked on these models. Is it possible to replace my E7600 by E8600?

I have not found an answer on the web.

It's a lot of work as you'll need to remove the logic board out of the system. It is risky job and yes, you could kill your system if you mess up installing the chip.

It's still best to just upgrade the RAM & drives first. Trust me ;-} I speak with experience here.

Yes, you can upgrade the CPU to the E8600 Core 2 Duo CPU. But given the amount of work and risks I'm not sure it makes much sense here. I would point out the amount of memory and the HD offers more performance benefit than replacing the CPU if you haven't done anything yet with them.

I would push the system to 12 GB and look at upgrading the HD to a SSHD or if you want to go a step further, go with a dual drive config using a SSD. Here are the IFIXIT guides:

I don't understand how that is possible if the E8600 has a 333 higher bust speed?? I thought it would be incompatible?!? but people say it works, I don't understand how.

Well... It really isn't running at the higher clock if all they did was swap out the CPU chip alone.

I.E. a race car stuck on a regular highway vs a race course!

You need to alter the logic board clock setting as well which requires a bit of soldering and a few jumpers and resistors.

I personally don't recommend it! Its just better to tackle the easy improvements: Max the RAM, Upgrade the HDD to a SSHD or SSD. Given the limitations of the system OS wise I think that's as far as I would go.

I just bought this E8600 processor based on this post.

So now I'm hearing it's "NOT" ACTUALLY compatible. Without serious modification.

So if I just swap the E8600 in, does it boot and work properly? or are you saying to reach full bus speed, it requires serious modification

Define working: It will fit and the system will run! But, it won't leverage what the chip was designed to offer! Its not worth it!

Take the time to review the schematics for the board to see how Apple (and many others) design a single board to support multiple CPUs.

I am a professional. I repair and fix computers for money. Taking apart a computer into a soup or parts across a table, and. putting it back together, isn't a hassle for me. I am tearing this Mac apart regardless for a GPU upgrade to a

Radeon 4850, and while it's apart, I'd like to swap this CPU in, and apply new thermal paste to the entire system.

Sorry, if the CPU is user upgradable on this model, it would be just a matter of swapping it out, but I do not believe that it is.

You are correct! It's more than a CPU swap out! You need to alter the logic board clock. Apple used the same logic board with different clock settings.
