Where is the sound card located? I can't hear any sounds.

Hi, the sound of my Macbook is not functioning at all. This started to happen when someone tripped over the cable of the Macbook causing it to fall from a small table. Just in cases I reinstalled the operative system but it doesn't seem to be a software issue.

I checked for disconnected plugs and cables in the logic board (both sides) but that didn't helped. Does anyone know if there's a sound card somewhere in the board? or if it might be a cable that i may have missed that makes the sound function properly.

Thank you very much in advance.

PS: if it is of some help the serial number of the computer ends in DTY4

PS2: No input/output devices found appears in the sound preferences, same with audio midi setup

I would also try resetting PRAM.

To reset your PRAM:

Shut down the computer.

Press the power button.

Before the grey screen appears, press the Command, Option, P, and R keys at the same time.

Hold the keys until your computer restarts and you hear the startup sound a second time.

Release the keys.

ALSO, make sure you have updated the computer since its a fresh install. This quite common on Mac.

Hi! I've already reseted the PRAM (several times) and the SMC with no luck. I've also reinstalled El Capitan and, just to see if something happened, Yosemite. Nothing happened with neither of them. Thanks.

Edit: I also updated all i could on the fresh install and tried everything that is suggested in the link that you gave me. But thank you very much anyway!

Okay, did you try killing and restarting the core audio?

I would do the following in your situation with my Mac if this happened.

I would try killing and restarting core audio.

I would then also open disk utility and repair disk permissions, then open audio in preferences to see if it shows up, if not restart.

(you can also: Open Terminal by clicking on "Go" and then "Utilities." Select the Terminal icon and enter the following code into the Terminal:

sudo kill -9 `ps ax|grep 'coreaudio[a-z]' | awk '{print $1}'`

You'll need to enter your password to use this code. This enables you to reset the audio without restarting the computer)

Also, Do you hear the Boot Chime? (the power on sound)

Hi Henry, I did everything you told and I still get nothing, it's very frustrating. There's also no Boot Chime. Thanks for your suggestions though.

PS: All of this makes me think that is a hardware issue because I also ran a clone of my mac from a few weeks ago, when everything was fine, and I still get nothing from the speakers.

Hey Andres, I can imagine it being very frustrating and the lag is differently no fun either. I would also agree with your assessment that it is looking more like a hardware based issue. If you take an image(nice and big) of your logic board I will help you identify the codec Giga is mentioning. No promises all my experience in Mac is from helping people or myself at some point. So I apologize if I am not the best resource.

Just something I found once or twice to work is to hold the option key and click on the speaker icon in the top right corner: it will show a list of all input and output devices, with a checkmark indicating the current default.

Oh and generally the sound card is the same as the wifi card.

Is there sound when you attach headphones? You can try opening the laptop and reconnecting the cable

No, there's no sound with headphones. The mac won't recognize them (they don't appear in the sound preferences, just like the internal hardware). I reconnected all the cables and nothing. Thanks anyway.

PS: and no, there's no red light in the headphones socket.

Reflow the audio codec. On the tear down it should show which is the audio codec/chipset

Hi, sorry for my ignorance but how do I do that. Thank you very much.

Use a heat gun or hair dryer, if it's the heat gun put it on low and if it's the hair dryer put it on max. Find the audio codec and in circles heat up the audio codec. Do this for 2 mins. Let the motherboard cool down. DO NOT TOUCH IT DURING OR AFTER REFLOWING FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES!!! You will burn yourself and potentially kill you MacBook logic board. After waiting, reassemble and see if it works.

Great suggestion!

Hi Gigabit878, as soon as I get my hands on a hair dryer (possibly on sunday) I will try to do as you told, I only need to find the audio codec on the logic board (I'm not sure where it's located).

Today I managed to sort of bypass this problem a little by using an external DAC that I have (Ibasso dx90), but the sound comes with a 2 sec lag, and it's terrible for watching videos, not to mention the mess of cables.
