Why does my nano shut when it goes into screen saving mode?

Just a week ago, my iPod nano generation 6 began having problems...as in the minute it goes into screen saver mode, the music stops playing. Is this a problem with the settings and if so, what can I do besides take it in to an Apple Store to get it repaired?

(I got it about 5 years ago for Christmas).
