Why does my asus laptop keep disconnecting from the internet?

I have an asus sonic master atheros ar5b125 and at my university my phone connects to the internet fine but this laptop can't stay connected for more than 30 minutes without me having to restart it to get it to connect to the internet again. I have uninstalled a lot of needless programs that it came with to try to remedy the problem but hasn't fixed much. This is a new computer and it should not be doing this please help!

I followed all replies EVERYWHERE with this. Going to the windows update website and clearing the "hung up install" and installing the updates again is what it was for me. Who is to say it is the download failing or the install failing but I suspect it is an errant packet or two that caused a "perpetual downloading" of a VERY massive update and it just churned causing the laptop to not only lose internet connection but to run as slow as molasses. It made a nice little machine run so slow I thought it was garbage time. Nope. Thanks to all for their answers.

How did you do that if your interns wasn’t working? That’s my problem... I can’t update anything bc all updates are asking for internet. Can you please give me a step by step instruction list for what to do? Please email at d_wade25@yahoo.com if you or anyone has some instructions I can do without my asus having any internet... I desperately need this thing to start working now.

Bob, Asus sonicmaster atheros ar5b125 keeps disconnecting from the internet, if updating your drivers for your wireless card, also get all your windows updates, if this does not do the trick try reseating the wireless card in the computer. Card may also be faulty, you may want to swap out/change your wifi card or try usb wifi adapter, some have extended range.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Hi,

Check, by using Device Manager, to see that you have the latest drivers for your WLAN adapter.

To get to Device manager in Win10 press win key + x key together, window should pop up with various links, including Device Manager, click to enter Device Manager, scroll down and find under Network Adapters your WLAN adapter , right click on it select Properties, click on Driver Tab update drivers.

Or here is a link to the latest Asus drivers. Use only the WiFi one if everything else is OK.

How many signal bars are showing on the WiFi connection?

Are you using the 2.4GHz or 5 GHz channels to connect?

Try downloading, installing and running a free WiFi scanning program to check the WiFi.

Use the program to see the actual signal level that you are using (remember the higher the number in dB the lower the signal strength - it is in -ve values). Also check to see how many other networks are on the same channel. The more networks using the same channel the more chance of interference which can cause problems.

Here is a link to a free WiFi scanner program. It is only one of many available.

Hopefully this will be of some help.

I can’t download any of this or visit these websites because the internet isn’t working on my laptop lol. It keeps showing the internet sphere symbol with a little circle w a line through it at the bottom. I restart my computer, nothing helps. I’m using my phone internet now... all my updates on my laptop say they require internet also. Gah... I guess I need to see a computer repair person for the “wireless card” or something....

@d_wade25

Can you download the drivers to another computer and then transfer the driver files to a USB, insert the USB into your laptop, then when updating drivers selct the option to find the drivers on your laptop on the USB drive?

In software aspect, there is only a few things you could do, like what @kristenp mentioned.

If you find out the wireless card not working, I strongly recommend you buy a refurbished wireless card on eBay.

Very, very late, lol, but in case anyone else out there has had this problem, this solution HASN’T fixed it fully for me but did help a lot. I’m no tech guy, but I read this on another forum and it seems like it couldn’t hurt to try. I feel the need to mention that, of course, this solution is for a 2021 computer. So anyone looking for this in the future, take note of the fact that I’m posting in 2021 and not 2018.

  1. Right click the internet symbol in the taskbar (d_wade25 describes it as a little globe with a circle with a slash through it, this is when it’s not working. when it is working it looks like wifi bars if you’re on a wifi connection. this solution will work whether your internet is currently working or not)
  2. Open Network & Internet settings
  3. In the Status tab, under Advanced network settings, you’ll see an option “Change adapter options”
  4. If it is WiFi that’s not functioning consistently, rightclick WiFi and choose Properties, then Configure. Go to Power Management tab
  5. Aha! What’s that? You’re currently looking at the settings for your computer’s thingy-that-lets-it-get-on-the-internet-thingy (Adapter), and yes indeed, that’s the option to just plain turn it off to conserve power, nested in like a billion menus. God dang it.
  6. Uncheck that. Pour yourself a drink.

Hi i tried this just now, after getting disconnected from my internet a couple times a day with restarting my laptop the only option. If this works, then you are a godsend.

This is not a real fix, but I've resorted to opening & closing the lid.

Their product support pages have led me on a wild-goose chase; they should really admit that their hardware is physically faulty in many cases, and that's behind the support cases.
