Problems replacing Power & Sensor cable

In all the great teardowns I 've seen it always says 'replace in reverse order!' My problem is this...

When you refit the proximity part and the small gold ring next to it - are they supposed to click into the sockets, or merely connect? I have firmly tried to push them in but think I've damaged the top now! I am happy to buy another part, but want to complete the assembly with this one so I know how the part feels when it is correctly fitted.

They just sit into place (align with two screw holes) and you put the two screws so that it doesn't wobble. Then the power button should click as usual signifying that it is installed correctly.

TL:DR - If you can get the two screws in fine for the lock button then it is fitted correctly. Just make sure you don't install it with the metal power button flipped upside down.
