No sound through lightning audio connector

My sons iPad mini has developed a problem with the audio connector - the sound is distorted when connecting audio devices. As an alternative I bought him a lightning to 3.5mm audio connector which is a Apple product but there is no sound coming through this at all, any help would be appreciated?
