iPhone 5 works after battery replacement until drained(?) then dead

I'm currently trying to fix an iPhone 5 that works just fine after a battery replacement (as long as the battery has some charge, it seems). The phone will turn on, it will charge normally, and nothing seems wrong. The battery does seem to drain a little bit fast.

However.. as soon as the battery is drained (or so it seems) the phone will not turn on again. It won't charge, it won't light up when connected to the cable, nothing. Until a different battery (with some charge) is placed. It still charges if it's turned on.

Last time the battery drained over night, without touching it. This was after a factory reset too so I will assume it's draining too fast (no app causing it). Taking the phone apart and swapping the battery every time this happens is a hassle. Does anyone know which part would be faulty to cause this?

Thanks!

You have a defective U2 IC. Was your phone water damaged or has it taken much physical abuse? Just because you don't have the tools or skills to replace the IC (as per your comment/reply to Earl Fletcher) doesn't mean you should "scrap" the phone. There are many shops that can do that repair and give your phone a second lease on life.

No water damage or any physical abuse it seems (I can't be sure, it's my sisters old phone, not mine). Not worth having it repaired since she already has a new phone, I was hoping to use this as a backup after replacing the battery. May try my luck on soldering, but probably not :-)

Replacing a U2 IC on an iPhone 5 requires considerable skill. It always looks easy in videos...just remember that those videos are created by very experienced micro solderers. You can always try to sell your phone for parts, that way it will avoid ending up in a landfill.

what brand batteries do you use? I'd go with the ifixit brand. You also probably don't replace the battery adhesive, so do that. You can buy it on ebay. it it still continues, swap the lightning port.

Actually, after reading some more it seems to be a more "common" problem with the "U2 IC" chip. It will drain the battery, overheat it (I didn't notice this) and refuse to charge when fully empty.

The symptoms sounds like what mine is experiencing. Sadly I don't have stable hands enough to do the replacement of the chip myself so I'll have to consider this phone lost.

I don't think it can have anything to do with not replacing the adhesive, although this is of course good advice.
