New battery doesn't charge and more

Howdy,

Been having a few issues with my Note 4, it constantly self-reboots, overheats when charging and quick decline in battery afterwards. Battery is not warped, but the plastic cover on top was cracked and loose (dropped one too many times, maybe??)

Anyhow after charging overnight, it had a red lcd light on and after removing battery and putting back in (which usually works) it didn't power on. I went and got a new battery. But when I started to charge it, there was no charging light, haptic feedback or even the battery level sign. I did a teardown on the phone and couldn't find any damage throughout. I thought new batteries usually have some power.

So did I get sold a dodgy battery or do I have another problem?

Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers.

@theaznop a multimeter is not going to show you if the battery can actually hold a charge. I would start with a new battery just so that I have a known-good starting point. Then work my way from that. "overheats when charging " is not usually a sign of a bad charging port, but a sign of a bad battery, bad power management IC or short in the charging circuitry.

Sometimes new batteries are under the operating voltage meaning that it may not allow the phone to display a charging icon when you plug the phone in with the new battery to charge it.

Once the battery voltage is high enough it will start to display a charging icon on the screen to indicate that the battery is charging.

Depending on how flat it is it may either take a long time or if the battery is faulty the battery voltage will not go up.

You can check the battery voltage by using a digital multimeter and using the probes on the battery terminals (on the battery).

Cheers Ben. I did a multimeter check, on both old & new batteries, they're fine. Ruled out the usb charger & wires; I'm thinking it may be the charging port.

how do I check the batteries

What's the battery voltage reading on the batteries? Around 3.9-4.2v is more than enough to turn the phone on without a charger plugged in.

On the other hand I just had a note 4 die on me two days ago. I could smell electrical burn near the charger port. Phone doesn't even show any signs of life now. I don't think replacing the charging port would help.

A damaged charger port combined with the use of fast charger appears to be deadly for a phone. It can kill the board in a way that probably the power ic got busted.

It's a shame that the phone us dead. Going to try send back to warranty from the eBay seller I bought from locally.. As the warranty seal is still there and I actually haven't opened the phone but only took the bottom cover near the charger port which is not a good idea because warranty voiding.

For my case the charger port is not physically damaged but the pins are burnt.
