Is there any risk in repairing myself after warranty has expired?

I have an iPhone 5. The battery has lost much of its capacity, so I'm considering replacing it with the iFixit replacement kit. The phone is longer in its normal warranty period.

I'm curious if performing this repair myself would void any sort of implied warranty, or other protections that consumer protection law in the US may give me. Will I be voiding any sort of future support from apple by performing this repair myself?

Your iPhone's manufacturers warranty is expired. Nothing you do will change any type of future support Apple can and will offer you. At this point, even if you bring in your device, they will charge you to the full extent for any repair.

You have nothing to lose. Replacing a battery is not inherently difficult but there are a few traps to avoid.

Everything is tiny and super delicate. Do not apply more pressure than you need to. When in doubt, stop what you are doing.
Keep track of your screws. If you only change the battery, you only have a few screws to keep track of. Sometimes they only differ by a few tenths of a millimeter but if you put them in the wrong place, very bad things can happen.
Watch out for the flex cables, they can tear very easily and if your not careful, you could end up having to replace a screen too.

If you like fixing things, then by all means, have at it and enjoy.
