Ribbon cable (headphones/rear tracking sensors) broken

Hey guys...

Some days ago, I bought one CV1 it from a friend. But unfortunately in the transport the ribbon cable in headband it broke. I tried repair this ribbon cable but I don't had success. I tried talk with the Oculus Support...I asked if they send me another headband for make my rift 100% again but apparently, they do not want help me. I know how disassembly/assembly my rift, this is no worry for me...but they said basically "Sorry to hear that Rift was damaged"...short answer: buy another one.

Anyone can help me about this problem? How can repair? Where find something that can use for fix?

I tried amend the ribbon cable using wires but when I test continuity with multimeter any pin doesn't work.

1- Before try fix, I tested continuity between this pins and the headphone pins, it's working.

2- I received the oculus in this situation. I needed cut the ribbon cable after this hole because was torn.

3- Conversation with the Oculus Support Team

3 - Soldered pins with wires in the both sides, at the moment, all that's fine. I tested again the continuity between the blue wire sides, it's working too...but if a test between the blue wire side and headphone contact...not working :( (maybe why I use this wire? need another wire type?)

4 - Another picture without zoom

Me too, did you ever manage to fix it?

No, I sold this and will buy another one :/

Hi, how did you remove that strap from where the ribbon cable is coming out.

Hi, can you please tell me how did you remove that right strap from where that ribbon cable is coming out.

the ribbon cable from my rift was cut in half. is there any other way to get the infared leds working on the back? maybe power them externally? i dont care about the audio. but do i really need the leds on the back when i have 4 camera's? i'm not experiencing any problems without the leds thus far maybe because i have 4 camera's.

Hey, so you can confirm that this wire powers the rear LEDs?

Hey, I have successfully repaired on so far. To be honest as shown here there is no need to follow the style of the existing cable, as long as it is flexible enough and long enough.

I used enamelled wire and a USB microscope to repair, best approach is to either use a micro pencil or heat gun to lay the hair thin cables.

I have also developed replacement side arms if anyone finds that they have broken, Very good for 3D printing, am "road" testing them right now to make sure they are up to the job but will basically replace the whole side arm attached to the metal side piece. This combined withe the micro soldering should deliver a fully working and colour customised oculus.

Update (08/25/2018)

Hey sorry for the very delayed reply.

The post messsd up so il keep it short as this is the 3rd time.

Basically the procedure went as above except that I used a USB microscope and enameled wire from an old stepper motor.

This stuff is amazing, trust me, comes in all the right thicknesses.

It works fine, you just have to be patient, sand and tin both ends of the ripped cable, don't be shy solder loves copper and heat, you can't really mess it up.

Now heat the end of your enameled cable with the solder to tin it and remove the enamel. Under your scope you have 5 cables to do. I used two different thickness of wire.

Lay the end of you wire onto the ripped part of your cable, line it up and stick it down with tape. Use a heat gun, to melt both tin and wire together without disturbing the alignment. Do this for all 5, both ends, again don't worry about extra length this can be hidden away later.

As for the 3d print part, I measured and made new parts, they are not exact as the originals are glued to the metal parts on the mask. Mine will clip over this, then if your happy can be epoxy glued.

Mine still have cable ties from testing but work perfectly after epoxy.

Any update on your repair solution for the headphone issue caused by the broken ribbon cable/wires that go from the side strap to the main Oculus headset?

This is becoming a bigger and bigger issue, seemingly at thhe 12-16 month mark.

Oculus won't help in any way - if you live in the US where they only offer a 12 month warranty, you need to buy a new one.

I believe in Europe they have 2 year warranty, which is how it should be!

I am very interested in seeing what it is you are working on

could you give more info pictures to how to solder ribon cable ? i have broken my rift and the ribon is 100% cuted ! m also interested for the 3D parts . if you have some links and stl to download if you want to share , you will be very welcome.

greetings

Any chance for an link for the 3D printed replacement?

Yes, like the other posters, I'm very interested in the tools you used, the wiring you used and of course the 3d print model. Is there any way possible for you to share? Please please please. You can email me at ds_walters@hotmail.com!

I had the headphone issue from what I assume to be a ribbon cable source, I'm about to pop open my case to see if that's true.

the strap arms I had one side have not only have cracking right around the cylinder and the flat rectangular piece (at the joint too except for some irregular bits that thankfully gave me enough to hope for repair) but also have the flat rectangular piece split lengthwise with a slight rotation.

There was enough surface area for me to kind of push it all back together and have it "stick" in place. I, maybe stupidly, used some cyanoacrylate glue to bond them all together and also some more applied around all joints and other relevant areas in layers to try to form a passable bond.

So far it's worked and I'm thinking about other ways that I could better reinforce this with say a stronger bonding material or layering in some small, flat support strips of metal

Other ideas were either using some LOCA glue that sets with UV and is clear, I use it to fix cracked smartphone screens.

Hi Luiz.

My Oculus rift slowly developed an audio issue. I took it apart to find the ribbon cable was half torn (only audio in left ear)

How many cables were there in the ribbon cable to solder?

Thanks

B

Just read further. That's rubbish. They should provide the so as requested parts. What do you think stopped it from working. If you had continuity it should have worked.

If you have 3 sensors you'll not have any problem with full 360, the back leds are for 2 front sensors setups, if you have 3 or 4 you'll have full coverage anyways so...

My rift tore in the exact same place just by that U joint. I have been able to solder wires to the 3 wider copper strips but not to the 3 small ones.

I am trying to figure out what is carried on the cable. The connector is 10 pin and there are 5 traces on the ribbon. It is possible there are just 2 pins per trace. The ribbon has 1 large trace at what i will call the bottom, 2 large traces in the middle very close together, and 3 very small traces at the top. I was able to power up the rift with it disassembled and found a voltage difference from the bottom trace to the one above it was a steady 20V and the upper middle trace is close in voltage to the bottom trace, as compared to both of the other lines. I was not able to measure the top 3 traces.

My best guess is that the bottom trace is ground the second is +20V and the third is data. Has anyone seen how these traces connect inside the band or found any more info on how they work? It seems strange that anything in the strap would be driven with 20V…

If I'm not mistaken, those are 3 audio channels and current for 3 rear tracking LEDs.
