Car tape deck clicks and rewinds on its own.

I just bought a used minivan today. It had a CD player (haven't tried it yet) and a cassette player. I bought a cheap cassette AUX cord type deal to plug my iPhone into so I could listen to Pandora. The adapter wouldn't go in and my tape deck started clicking very loudly. I couldn't get it to stop. It even did it when the car is completely off and doesn't stop.

Well, the clicking eventually got quieter and now it sounds like it is quietly rewinding. It still does it when the car is completely off. Putting a regular cassette in doesn't help as it won't take it.

Please help :( I was so excited about this van (still am but just really want this to stop). I'll buy an itrip for future but any suggestions on getting this to stop?

Have you tried pulling the fuse for the radio, waiting a minute and then putting the fuse back in? Maybe it would reset whatever mechanism was faulty and at least get it to stop. At any rate, if it keeps clicking when the key is out of the ignition, you will want to pull the fuse to make sure it doesn't drain the battery overnight. Be sure to put the fuse back in before you go anywhere, as it might control multiple peripherals.

It might also help if we knew the year, make and model of your van, as well as the model of radio if it is visible. You may have to remove the radio to find out the model. If the tape deck is a separate unit you could just remove that portion, but I assume it is partnered with the radio.

Thank you for that advice!!! That helps a lot. I will try the fuse if I can find where the box is located. I'm assuming under the dash drivers side but not sure. The tape deck looks like it's a seperate unit actually which might be great.

It's a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan but not sure of the make of the stereo. Looks factory to me though.

I'll try this and let you know.

You might want to look at the thread posted below for info on fuse panel location for your van. You may just have one fuse under the hood labeled IOD, or there may be another fuse box around the IBD2 port under the dash. If the van came with a manual, it should have more info on the fuses or their location.

Where is the fuse panel located?
