White screen of death

I replaced my hard drive and cable. Initially brought up the restore screen -the one with choices including restore from time machine. Thought I had to pick disc verification and repair. ( I may have done this before replacing the hard drive hoping I could access my data) now I can't get back to that screen. No matter if I hit option or command R when restarting, I get to internet where I have to enter my password and then the wsod pops up with a globe and failure. Please help as this is driving me crazy!!!!
