Swapping hard drives from Dell to Dell

Latitude 2100 to a Inspiron 1520

Hello, I haven't done much "body" work with laptop's so I have some things I need answered before I attempt anything that could potentially mess my files up. I just was gifted a "new" computer and would like to take my old computers hard drive and put it in the new one. Both computers are dell, my old is a latitude 2100 and the new one is an Inspiron 1520. The new one just has a wayyy bigger screen and I feel is just better all around. So here's the kicker. My old laptop has had some work done to it. My hard drive crashed a while back and needed to be replaced. The person who did it for me got a brand new 1 TB hard drive so I would have plenty of room and such. My question is if I just take it out of the old and put it in the new is it going to power on and work like nothing is wrong? Or am I going to screw everything up because for some reason they are not compatible? Let me know asap please.

Thank you much!

Simon -- What is the Operating system on both computers?

@mrdrsimon, do you still want an answer? If so, I can provide 2-3 options, depending on whether you care about the DVD drive or not. These other answers are not exactly accurate...

DrGlowire -- We seem to have lost the guy with the question, so I will just add this and move on. Assuming he is moving a drive with Win8 or 10, it will work very well. On first boot, Windows finds correct drivers for the new hardware. A clean install is definitely better, but is a lot more work -- especially for a neophyte. Plus, he was concerned about retaining his files.

Regards, Russ

That is assuming a lot.

Most likely it will work, but not very well. The problem is the hardware is different from old model to new model; the video, BIOS, system devices probably are different manufacturers. It is better to do a clean install by formatting the hard drive and installing the OS.

Always back up your files before you do anything.

This is not the recommended way of doing it. But, it should work. Again, can't stress this enough... backup your files before you do anything!
