Can a bad / Damaged HDD or HDD cable cause it to intermittently shut down?

Can these really cause the system to shut down randomly?

Other than liquid damage on the board e.g shorted c7731 or something capacitor used for the ppbus_3v3s5 for example.

Edit: Board number 820-3115 for reference.

No. White screen but not a shutdown.

Were you getting any screen anomalies?

@rany may know more about this and he should be getting up about this time in Lebanon. But it's Easter Sunday and Passover.

BTW he's updated his profile and I'm already picking out some boards to send him: https://www.ifixit.com/User/494211/Rany

The loading bar during boot suddenly became white for just a moment probably during the testing phase.

Is that normal?

My guess is a bad current sensing resistor.

Did it happen about 60-65% of the way through the load?

Sorry I missed that tag @benjamen50

Like @mayer said, I've never myself seen intermittent shut downs from bad HDD or SATA cable. I've seen failure to boot from damaged system (fixed by rebuilding directory), but not shut downs. Not to say that I know everything.

If you'd want insight, we'd really need more details about these shutdowns.

Personally when I have a liquid damaged board I go over all the board with the scope. Literally not missing any component.

Also thanks for the plug @mayer.

The only way I've seen it is if the OS had a kernel crash in older OS-X (32 bit) by a misbehaving app. Today its rare to see a OS crash out and you would get a panic alert not a complete wink-out.

I think Paul nailed it (see his answer), a battery/charger type of issue could be the cause here but its not a shutdown but the system went into a deep sleep condition Use the Energy Saver settings on your Mac go to the section 'Other sleep modes' for more info on deep sleep.

Hi,

Normally your computer should start in any case. If your cable was damaged, the computer should display a logo with a file and a question mark (indicating no hard drive found).

If the computer randomly shuts down, I would try to have a look at the battery. Does it also happen when the computer is connected to the charger?

Hope that helps

@polo492 - I think you hit it!

A low battery condition would cause the system to go into deep sleep which could thought of as a shutdown event.

It could be caused by a bad threshold level in SMC or a bad/low battery. I would do a SMC reset and run CoconutBattery to check the battery.

This is a valid theory. Unfortunately, the board is liquid damaged and that means really anything could be misbehaving.

@rany - I don't think Ben stated it was liquid damaged. I think it was just a thought of possibilities not conclusively ID'd as the issue here.

"Other than liquid damage on the board e.g shorted c7731 or something capacitor used for the ppbus_3v3s5 for example."

Oh ok @danj now I get it.

@rany - No biggy, I even had to take a second read ;-}
