Optical Drive does not easily grab disks. It does READ & Write.

So I think I damaged my optical drive by putting a disk while it was sleeping.

The drive would not easily accepts disks.

I purchased a replacement and reconnected everything but again the NEW drive finds it difficult to accept discs.

( just a note, I'm have experience in repairing laptops, after the install everything else worked fine)

To clarify, once the disk is inside and spinning it can and is read.

I think The issue a some sort of pressure from the case that compresses the drive.

I have tested this by unscrewing the case and using the drive and it manages to grab disks much easier than when the case is secured.

Is there a what to test any pressure on the drive?

additional note: I did not drop my macbook, there is NO Physical Damage to that area or any other area on the laptop.

Sounds like a misalignment or seated to high. What is the number on the drive? Do you have the number from the original drive? I suspected it has not been fully seated. Did you swap the original retaining hardware when you changed the drive?

The replacement drive is the same as the original the (Panasonic) UJ-898a

I did transfer over the original mounting hardware.

A misalignment sounds about right. When I have the time I'll take a look at the alignment and the fitting. From looking at how the disk needs to angle up a bit as it enters, it seems like the drive is not seated correctly.

I will be also test each drive externally with a SATA to USB adapter cable.

thank you for your suggestion.

I took the time today to remove the replacement drive and reset its placement.

I took my time and and made sure that nothing was either pressing down on it (the adjacent wifi and camera cables) and the case was properly secured.

That seemed to work. I also took the time to clean the (felt?) material that guards the opening from both the inside and outside.

thank you for that suggestion. I will be testing my old drive anyway since i think It still can have a life externally. Thank you.
