iPod does not connect to iTunes

My wife found her old iPod and wants me to fix it. It plays the music that is on it, it takes a charge through a wall outlet or when connected to a computer but will not connect to iTunes. It even plays on a speaker dock. I tried several USB cables so that is not the problem. I connected it to two Macs, an iMac and a MacBook, but does not show up on either one. It does not show up in Disk Utility. I reset the iPod several times.

Any idea what the problem is with this thing?

You'll need a new battery, the installation guide is here and linked there are the batteries for if you either have the 30GB or 60/80GB model.

The reason it doesn't connect to iTunes is that the battery is shot? Out of curiosity, why would the battery affect it's ability to talk to mount on iTunes or computer? It takes a charge through the cable. Thanks.

sometimes on a totally empty batery the USB does not supply enough current. I believe the ipod requires 500ma whereas some of the usb outlets as well as hubs do go as low as 100ma. You can of course try a USB in the back (one that comes right of the MOBO. Do not use a hub) If nothing elses, you can alwasy try to reinstall iTunes. I do seem to remember that there can be a conflict with the drive name if they are already assigned. In windows it sometimes helps to remap the network, not sure with Mac. Hope this helps a little, good luck.

I successfully replaced the battery on the iPod. However, it still does not connect to iTunes nor does it show up in Disk Utility. It does charge when connected to the MacBook. Could it be the dock connection?

Gary, I have had lots of ipod video's with all kinds of errors and ailments but seriously never had a problem with the dock connection. I am absolutely clueless when it comes to Mac's but here is the Apple solution ;) http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410

Check your dock connector for any damage. I have one here where the pins of the connector are loose and stick up a bit. If I carefully plug it in, It works fine, if not I normally get the same issue as you, charges but wont detect in iTunes. If it appears damaged, you will want to find someone to replace it since it requires special tools to remove and replace the connector.
