When I press the eject button the DVD drive makes a sound like if it was trying to slide the tray out, but it struggles in vain against the Mac Pro drive door.
I can open the door by hand from the inside and it doesn't seem to be stuck.
I tried moving the DVD drive from the top to the bottom slot but the problem remains.
I never did figure this out and eventually sold the machine. Thanks though!

Sounds like the friction mechanism that moves the drive tray is wearing out. My guess is to replace the optical drive.

a warped DVD lay it on a flat surface or place the edge of a ruler across it to see if it is out of true.

Well turns out it's not the drive door of the Mac Pro. I ran the machine with the DVD pulled out and it's the drive itself which struggles to open. If I use a paperclip to open it the first step, it'll eject from there on, and also close properly. But it seems like the DVD drive lost the ability to 'unlock' itself to allow the tray to come out.
I opened up the DVD but I could not find any obvious mechanical defects. Either way it seems like the drive should either be repaired or replaced. Anyone know what could be wrong inside of the drive itself to prevent it from unlocking the tray?

Note that there is no CD or DVD inside of the drive.
