How can I repair the volume keys?

There aren't really any guides on this so I'm wondering.

In the process of trying to fix my cracked screen, I have ripped the cable ribbon that attaches my volume controls to my main motherboard.

Is there any way to fix this?

By the way, it is a full rip, because I heated up my Touch to open it up, and the cable was attached to my EMI shield when it wasn't supposed to.

And when I pulled off the shield, I didn't notice it.

Thanks.

etechparts.com carries lot of harder to find parts such as flex cables, audio jacks, etc, the pricing is not bad.

When I replace the volume/power flex cable I always de-solder the + terminal from the battery and slide a piece of Kapton tape between the cable and the solder pad. In addition, I place pieces of Kapton tape on the logic board anywhere I'll be doing solder work.

Last, call me a Kapton tape freak, I put a little Kapton strip across the new flex cable where the power button is --- this way if you have to lift in and out the logic board, say experiencing LCD issues, it reduces the risk of tearing.

Kapton tape, the right heat settings on your soldering station, a de-solder braid, some 60/40 rosin core solder, flux and 94% isprophal alcohol are what I use when it comes to solder work on the iPods/iPhones. I also use a 30x jewelers loupe to check anything prior to soldering - de-soldering to ensure their are no contaminates that could cause arching.

But, once you get your technique down you'll easily be able to replace back-plates, etc.

Also, I suggest removing cables using a very small drop of flux and a braid, again with the right temp setting on your iron. Also remember to clean off any flux with alcohol 92%+, and dab the board with a static free clean cloth.

Many videos show people using pry tools to lift off the old cable, with just a little too much heat or wrong timing you can easily rip off the solder pad from the logic board. <- been there done that. :(

alan,

You can find what you need here:

iPod Touch 4th Generation Teardown

The teardown shows the volume controls and fragile ribbon cable on the second page. I have replaced the sleep hold volume controls on the 2nd and 3rd gens with no problem so I am thinking it should be a snap if you can find the parts. Let me know how it goes!

Marc- the 4th gen ipod is completely ripped from the mainboard. i dont see how i can do this unless i find that exact cable and the resolder it back to the mainboard.

You can get them on the e site pretty cheap. I am thinking it would be no harder than installing a battery. If you have soldering skills should be a breeze. Good luck and please let us know how it goes and if you have any input to the process that will help others down the line!

Hi Marc,

Can you point me to this "e site" to get the part I need?

Thank you,

George

Gentlemen,

The "e" site of course is ebay. You can go to electronics, mp3 accessories and search for the device, generation and part you need there. Since the 4th is the latest, newest gen I am not sure if they are listed there yet as I haven't had to do anything but digi glass for those so far. If you don't see them google away you might get lucky! Good luck and please let us know how you do!
